Probably because they can keep using the same exhaust from the n54 135i.

This. Bmw is not going to entirely redesign something if they can help it. This helps the bean counters stay happy :-)

this also means someone could put the N55 exhaust on an N54 car...with no more secondary cats in the i models, it could be a cheap way to upgrade to a more free flowing factory exhaust.

Yup, that's where a test pipe comes in...

Matt,
Is a test pipe in the works as we speak?

A test pipe would really open up the exhaust. An EVO IX with an intake, header, test pipe, and a tune really turns it to a different animal. A lot of EVO owners would know that's a fact.

I know it may not be easy, but try applying the same thing to the N55...

Only thing is, if you delete that cat, there aren't any after that. The n55 on the 335i has no cats or res on the pipes.

Hmmm, power delivery would be a lot better IMO if the cat was deleted. Imagine that, no more restrictions. May sound better as well. I would take a free-flowing exhaust any day!

However, there might be drawbacks when the cat is deleted:

1) Maybe too loud for some.

2) The cat should be re-installed when it's time for a smog check.

Oh, I'm all for free flow. Just that our cars will be cat less and some people don't like that

Turbochargers work great to reduce exhaust noise. Check out the underside of a Neon SRT4 sometime, no mufflers!

I was thinking ab having the muffler shop run me just 1 pipe from the DP back to the mufflers then split it right before the mufflers ... any thoughts ?

Well according to Shiv on another post, these turbos are going to be good for about a max of 390hp. Any idea if we can start upgrading these turbos? I'm gonna need more than 390whp...

2x 2.5" diameter pipes has an area that is about equivalent to a single 3.5" pipe.

I see your point about clearance. You could always try to oval the pipe a bit to maintain the same area with a smaller vertical dimension. As long as it's not too extreme, it won't have a huge effect on backpressure. It's primarily a question of flow area.

The biggest gain will be just replacing/removing that huge catalytic converter. The pipe sizes/arrangements past that will be insignificant compared to a high flow cat or none at all.

What cat? I know on the 335i n55 there are no cats or res on the pipes...

+1... There are no cats on the pipes, the N55's only have that 1 (two stage/structure) cat on the DP

ALthough it has been shown that there are either resonators or cats on the 335 x-drive's... (did anyone confirm whether those were cats or resonators on the x-drives'?)

I know on the N55 X5, there are no other cats or resonators after the DP.

I was talking about the cat on the downpipe. Removing/replacing that will yield the biggest gains.

How you do the piping downstream of that isn't going to matter nearly as much...
