Noise while turning in reverse - BMW 3-Series (E90 E92) Forum

I recently noticed in reverse, that when im backing up and turning there is a noise like a groan, coming from under the hood.

Im not sure if its from the steering column or something to do with the wheels. It happens only when the steering is in a certain turning position and im moving in reverse.

Any thoughts anyone?

I seem to hv the same problem. dunno if that's normal.

I have heard this before too. Do you have aftermarket wheels? I noticed that my wheels are so tight in the wheel well that they actually slightly rub on the wheel well near the oil cooler vent. I am not sure but maybe your wheel is rubbing as well.

That is all i have come up with so far...

Nope...i have stock wheels...so im not sure why it happens...its also intermittent....so it doesnt happen all the time...

anyone else with this issue?

It's probably just the power steering pump groaning.

It is pretty loud in comparison to other cars I have driven.

Try moving the wheel to full lock - if it sounds the same but louder, definitely PS.
