Upgrading center speaker: Who's done it?

Has anyone upgraded center channel (beyond BSW) and kept L7 employed? What were the results like? Gotta buy a pair of speakers to try the one center- have Focal polyglass in the doors so was thinking the coax version for the center- so I would appreciate opinions from SQ-picky types. Thanks!

You can buy one coax from the BMW individual audio system. I think Technic uses it and is very happy.

Thanks. Not sure that would be a good match for the Focals. I'll shoot him a PM.

Don't think that just because it is a Focal coax, it will be a good "match".

Let's see, OEM is different driver materials & designs for both tweeter and mid and different manufacturer. Focal would be identical tweeter and nearly identical mid and same materials and manufacturer. Absent installing and testing all 4" coax models, I'd go with the latter having the best chance at a good voicing match.

If you are using no signal processing, I would tend to agree with you, even though the two are more different than they are alike. Make damn sure though that the tweeter will clear the OEM grille, otherwise you may have to think about other options.

Oh, I've got a Zapco DSP6 in there. But DSP CANNOT make two very different speakers sound alike, even if the measured responses can be made almost identical. High end home theater is a great example. Now the acoustic differences of the environment between center and fronts may dwarf the signature distinctions in such a set-up, but you are still ahead of the game if you start with the most similar drivers available. For the exact same reason you wouldn't put Morels in one door and Focals in the other.

I put the bsw center speaker in mine.

The old one was blown. Sounds nice, I am pleased.

It is true that DSP cannot change the electromechanical tendencies of a speaker.

But I'm no longer certain that your statement above is correct. I would agree that most DSP's won't, and maybe even can't, do it - but I think that given the right filter arrangement, it's technically possible now.
