How to change the stock shift knob?

I have heard just oull it hard, and it will come off. How hard is hard? Am I going to damage anything? Is it connect to the shift boot?

Any photos you can share? Any one has installed the M-Sport shift knob? Is it just push on, or screw on?

Thanks,

careful. I think that the e90nshift knob requires an allen key for removal. Located under the edge of the shift boot. Seach other DYI sites for more info.

go to main forum page and "search forum" for "shift knob". Some earlier discussions from Sept and Oct pop up. May be useful to you

If its a manual knob, just put it in second and pull up hard. Make sure you dont hit yourself in the head...

I will be replacing my knob soon... so we shall see

Its a pull off for both manual and auto shifts. Take care on pulling the auto as there is a plastic rod running down the centre. Make sure you pull straight up only.

I just received my E90 M-sport knob last night. As you all said, drop into 2nd, then pull hard. It took me like 5 mins only. E90 M-knos is great; it is a weighted knob.

I know the m sport knob is attached to the shift boot. How did you take the old boot off? I will be doing the same swap soon...

The boot was hold in place by plastic clips, and it pops right up when you pull on it.

I received P/N 25110404454 for my E90 today. Tried to remove the stock one... no luck. The boot portion is easy. I put into second and pull straight towards me (in direction knob is leaning), but no luck. I guess I am too weak?? I'll give it another shot tomorrow.

only OEM's short shift comes with the boot that needs to be replaced right? because i am ordering a hamann shift knob and it doesn't seem like it comes with a boot.
another thing is that when putting on the new knob is it also just pushing it back in hard? and will it be the same for the hamann shift knob?
