DMTL pump bad

Service engine soon light came on last week, Dealer had to replace the DMTL pump (Diagnostic Module Tank Leakage) . I had the High pressure Fuel pump replaced two months ago??

Have many folks had the DMTL pump replaced??

Did some Google searches, looks like BMW has had problems with the DMTL pump going back to 2001.

Wow that's the first time I've heard of that.... I wonder exactly what happens when this goes bad...?

I am assuming the pump is used to detect fuel leaks. So all in all does nothing until you do in fact have a leak.

I had it replaced, its just emissions diagnostic pump. Its what you hear running in the left side of the trunk after you turn the car off.

That is not what you hear. What you hear in the trunk is the amp fan.

Interesting, I was told by the service guys that the noise you hear back there is the DMTL pump. I know the amp is on that side too though, so it makes sense as well.

You door here the pump for about a second when you unlock the door (or open the drivers door) or the car wakes up.

Just got mine replaced today on 2007 335i coupe with 23k miles. Service engine soon light came on and dealer diagnosed as DMTL pump. Had never heard of it until today and I came home to search and found this thread.

I had it replaced last week, after the car had a check engine light a week after buying it. At first they just reset the code, but it came back and so they replaced the pump. The code hasn't come back *crosses fingers*

Woah... I just had my car for two weeks, and the check engine light came on. Same thing - they replaced my DMTL pump.

DMTL Pump Repair

2006 330i

After overfilling the gas tank once, the check-engine-light came on within a day or two. The OBD code reader led me to the DMTL pump, which I think is a vacuum pump that sucks the fumes from the top of the gas tank near the filler cap. With the help of the diagram earlier on this thread, I found it and removed it.

Partial disassembly (unsprung the 6 or so plastic clips around the plastic housing) revealed a small 12V DC motor. Applying 12V to the motor terminals resulted in turning the motor, but the action was not smooth. I was able to get it apart further, eventually taking apart the tiny vane pump - a circular rotor with 4 sliding inserts, all made of black plastic. I lightly lubed the rotating parts with some motor oil, and reassembled. Testing it with 12V DC gave a better action and sound. I then reinstalled to the car, reset the OBD codes with the code reader/resetter and it's been fault free for the last week or so!

My guess is that when I overfilled the gas tank, liquid gasoline was ingested by the pump, which would have had the effect of washing away any lubricant from the internal surfaces of the vacuum pump parts, causing it to run slowly or seize once it dried. Will let you know if the lube job holds or not!

Jan.13.2011. Update: Still no check engine light, no faults, for a month now.

June.29.2011 Update: Kept throwing P1447 codes for last few months, so bought a new replacement DMTL pump online, installed it today, reset OBD. Fingers crossed.

What codes are you guys getting? I'm getting p2402 and people are saying it's this pump. Does anyone know how to test this pump first before i go and replace it?

The check engine light has nothing to do with the DMTL pump....it's emissions related so it trips the SES light.

The CEL may have just been a coincidence.

You can test the pump with a BT tool. Set the purge valve to the closed position and run the pump....check for leaks or if the pump is running.

I also believe that P code points to a faulty pump but it could also be a leak. Faulty o-rings or a hole in one of the vent tubes. You really have to get your EVAP system smoked to check for leaks.

BTW, how do you guys over fill a gas tank? I've never had that happen to me.

By taking it to the dealer or an indy shop.....You need an OBDII interface.

Just got back from my local shop, I had my my check engine light come on two days ago.

He ran a scan on my car and it came back saying i had an error with my DMTL pump. He cleared the error & told me to drive it around for a week.

If it came back, he can replace the part for $291.00 installed (i am out of warranty).

I will keep you guys posted.

Over the past 3 days I started getting 3 different codes, all related to the DMTL. Is this something that can be replaced on your own, or does the dealership have to do it?

BTW, my codes are:
P1434 - DMTL malfuntion
P1447 - DMTL pump current too high during solenoid test
P1449 - DMTL pump current too high

DMTL pump is easy to replace. Just remove the panel under the passenger side rear, remove the 3 or 4 screws for the carbon canister, then you can drop that down and see the pump on the front side of the canister.

I just bought a 2002 325i and of course 2 days after the CEL came on and it is throwing the DMTL Pump. Where can I buy a DMTL pump for my 2002 325i? I have looked but cannot find any..I guess I am looking in the wrong place :/
