are you asking if it would cause any damage? I've done it with finishing or waxing pads at low speed with no problem... but I would mask it just so you don't have to deal with excess polish/wax in that area...

I actually had a problem one time after removing my tape from masking off a customer's hood roundel. The blue painters tape removed some of the graphic material and I freaked. Ever since that experience I haven't taped them off and simply avoid them with more aggressive methods (pad/machine speed/cut product etc.). I personally buff mine with very mild techniques with my DA machine and it works to brighten it up quite a bit. Never had a problem with mine.
I believe the customer's roundel mentioned above was an aftermarket replacement and the OEM roundels are probably more substantial with regard to either quality or finish Just wanted to relay my experience. Basically I use EXTREME caution because of my little "boo boo". Maybe hand correction might be best if you're unsure.
