not being a diesel owner, how do you tell when a DPF regen is happening

It's call a "regeneration", the goal is to heat up to 600degrés C and burn all the particles stored inside.

Biggest indication to me is the instant mpg needle sitting around 10mpg below what it normally does.

I drive the same roads everyday and the needle sits at 50mpg but when it sits at 30mpg and the revs stay artificially high, essentially in the range the turbo is near peak boost which produces more heat. What i do is just flick it into manual and keep the revs around 2k rpm to keep the heat up so its finished before i get home so it's not stretched out.

I have no idea if the following is accurate but i seem to have a minor episode like the above every 1k. But every 3 or 4k i seem to have a major burn where you notice a slight power reduction and a noticeable smell, like burning sugar.

This morning with my DIS connected, i have check the impact of the revs on the exhaust gaz température.

ex :

When you are at 110 km/h with cruise control :
1800 rpm : gaz temps approx 260 degrés.
2500 rpm : gaz temps approx 210 degrés.

Conclusion, when you are not full throttle, it's a bad idea to increase revs with a little "load".
the principe is simple : A diesel works with a lot of air, and a lot of rpm without charge gives the result of "few gasoil with a lot of air"

So it's decrease the exhaust gaz température.

Interesting findings - isn't 1.8k the start of max torque in the 335d?

It's point of highest volumetric efficient lowest frictional losses - essentially where the engine is most efficient for the volume of fuel injected. As i believe the turbo is spinning at peak rotation? ... the air fuel mixed is maintained so more fuel is injected.

On BMW docs , the max torque for the 325d is 400nm at 1300 rpm. (i have a 325d not a 335d)

what is this DIS diagnostic tool? Seems to have better user interface screens than the Bavarian Technic one.

So if a software could do all that you want, it is this one

Merci, so it is not commercially available?

I agree with your on lower gear and lower exhaust temperature, I see the same, but that is not the same as regeneration. At regeneration the engine will try to get 600C, by means of a very late injection so fuel goes unburned thru the engine and turbo, hits the oxidation catalyst, does the oxidation thing (=burns), and heats up the DPF.

On my engine i can see this happening, i can play with it (on/off), and don't feel a thing in engine response. Which makes sense to me as a late injection of fuel has zero influence on engine power. Yes you can see the fuel economy indicator changing, but it is minimal. I notice it as I have LED's flashing when regen starts

Commercialy it's availaible but very very expensive ....

in normal cruising, the temperature is between 150 degrés (Engine braking) and 350 - 400 degrés during acceleration or highway cruising.

and for "don't feel a thing in engine response. Which makes sense to me as a late injection of fuel has zero influence on engine power" you are right, the only thing visible is the auto gearbox in sport mode (in city) during regeneration and the smell if you stop the engine during the process.


What is your LED, how it works ? Do you have a schematics for making this ? It works with a signal emitting by the DDE unit ?

I can quite clearly detect the different running of the engine (slightly laboured), and altered gear shift points when in a regeneration cycle. Commented on it before.

But most of my driving is urban and B roads, perhaps more difficult to notice if sitting at a steady speed on the motorway.

No, I have this OBD reader in my ashtray

With this you can make simple programs to have lights blinking, or steady, based on min/max values it reads from the OBD. DPF intake temperature is on the OBD
