Total loss of sound

A couple of days ago, about 2 mins into my journey all of a sudden i got a load of crackling/interference type noise coming through the speakers. this went on for about 5 minutes, Then nothing... no radio, no cd, no Sat nav commands, no parking sensor beeps or warning bongs.

I stopped the car got out locked it and started it up again hoping it would reset the iDrive (can you tell I work in IT), anyway no joy. I did get slight electrical burning smell, and thought the worst but it was very slight and didn't last.

I was ready to book it into the dealers to get it sorted (atfter patting myself on the back for buying the extended warranty). However yesterday after 2 days of not working everything started working again.

Anyone had this before? is it worth getting it looked at?

Yes, I had a short on one of my rear speakers, no burning smell but crackled and lost all sound. It reset every few hours as the sound is always on the 3er due to PDC, iDrive etc. I changed my speakers to cure the problem, but you could start by disconnecting some of yours to see if the sound stays on.

I had the same thing. Happened about a year ago.

Sound vanished ... drove where I needed to go in silence. Parked up. When I got back in the car it was all back to normal and it's been fine ever since. I put it down to some software strangeness - I figured it it was wiring then it would have reoccurred by now.

I had my radio controls lock up one day, right after a dealer patch was applied.

The volume was on and playing a MP3, but all controls for the audio crashed.

Had to yank the battery terminal off for a few minutes.

Had exactly this on my e92 a year ago. Had to leave car with bmw for a day to change some sort of hard drive and recode everything.
