Is that the NA or turbo GTi? Why I ask, if it is the turbo I'd suggest (purely on experience from mpg figures for engine types) that you will likely find it hard to get high figures in a 320d. For two reasons, being frank here, either your conditions are quite average, or you don't appear to drive economically, even on the motorway. Also coming from the GTi I suggest you will work the diesel, to get performance.

BTW, recent London to Brighton run had the BMW 320d @ around 77mpg.

@HighlandPete

Firstly, thanks for the help. Its the MK5 GTi Edition 30 so yes turbocharged (230bhp). The figures I've stated are averages for each journey not momentary MPG's. For example the very best I've had is 38 and the worst a 24.

I drive sensibly on the motorway at bang on 70mph as per speedo. Particularly on journeys to work and back - there isn't usually much point in driving aggressively due to traffic etc.

I'm after something similar to a work A3 2.0 TDi 140 I borrowed a few months back, I literally couldnt get it below 40.

From your comments and the car you drive, you seem to be somewhere on the average. I'd suggest you could look at the 320d combined figure and knock off about 10% for your expected average.

As an example, a 318d driven at motorway speeds (under real world tests) gives about 54mpg. Driven by the average driver, in average conditions, is expected to give around 53mpg. A 520d, from real world tests, 51 motorway and 48mpg total average.

A lot of users on here, reflect heavy driving and/or urban conditions.

I'm puzzled by mine, OBC shows between 33-36 mpg (mainly town driving), when I fill it up it shows between 450 to 480 on the range which I presume it works out from your average mpg yet I'm only actually getting around 350 miles a tank recently?

Its remapped and I've often wondered if the software is rigged to show a better mpg than its actually doing.

The distance (miles remaining) part, is a rolling calculation, based on the mpg you are doing at the time. So you could fill when your car is on a higher figure, and is not representative of your average mpg.

I'm aware some remaps/boxes seem to mess the OBC accuracy.

Averaging around 17mpg in my 335i with average speed of 22 I have realised its normal.

My 1.6 tdi mk 6 golf returns around 35mpg average. Its the city driving and short trips that kills economy so badly. The official figs for the golf are like 50 combined, cant get close nor with the 335i figures.

M1 roadworks last weekend and miles of 50mph with average speed cameras

Suck on that Prius drivers: 65mpg or 4.3L/100km in a 1.6 tonne car with a 3L engine.

500 mile drive puts me on 44.2mpg average

Not an E90, but I just got 38.1mpg from a heavily loaded E60 525i LCI over 150 miles of mostly A roads. I was staggered, my E39 530i gets 31. Perhaps BMW's awesome quoted figures for the newer petrol engines are not quite so far fetched after all?

330d Auto Economy Drive

Well just done a round trip to Heathrow, 234 miles total at 65mph. Average 49.5MPG and a range showing of 734 miles!!

OK, boring as hell but does prove the 330d (auto, pre-lci, mapped) can do good MPG when needed! Temps were 3C way there and 9C return so should be 1-2MPG better in the summer.
