Iphone4 email

Went for the iphone4 after a lot of thought.

Setting up email tonight. My address is a BTinternet one and reading on Net seems to suggest using the Yahoo setting as this is what BT is apparently. Have got it working so that I can receive and send mails but they do not seem to show up on phone automatically, I only get them when I open email on phone and it checks for mail. The account is set to push so my assumption was that mail would show up when received.

Also how should phone email interact with my laptop, should mail received on phone still show up on laptop. also if I delete mail that arrives on phone does that still come to phone. And if I reply from phone this does not show on laptop, should it?

Sorry for all the questions but I'm a bit of an amateur on this area and know there are plenty of experts here.

Mines doesn't automatically retrieve e-mails. When I click on 'mail' it automatically checks for new e-mails but doesn't do this on a timely basis. There's small icon (curled arrow) on the bottom left of the screen that reloads the page and retrieves anything new. As I say, if I leave the page open, it doesn't recheck. Not sure if you can set it to do that though .

My e-mail on my laptop is through Outlook and, it seems, if I delete on my phone (whilst my Outlook is closed or laptop turned off), they do seem to not arrive when I next go onto Outlook (mail stored on an external server). That said, my Bus.Ptnr, who has a 3GS doesn't seem to act like this, his e-mails still get delivered to his Outlook even if previously deleted on his iphone (not sure if this is a new iphone4 function or whether our setting are different).

Oh, congratulations on finally making a decision ; what are you initial thoughts???

Send a message via MSN to MEGA
Settings -> mail -> fetch new data ->push

or settings ->mail ->fetch new data -> every 15 minutes (if your mail provider doesnt offer push)

I bet it is set to manually right now.

Mega.

re: interaction depends if you use IMAP, Exchange or pop3 and on how your subscriptions are set up

Mega , it is set to push email or 30 mins to check, thought maybe every 15 mins might run the battery down but should probably try it.
YOur second answer goes a bit beyond my technical understanding but it isn't through Exchange I am working, its Pop3 perhaps ?? Guess its not a major issue if it syncs every 15 mins thats good enough as nothing too urgent coming through.

Roger, just got the phone on monday via an Ebay purchase. Is immaculate which is what the ad said and only 2 months old hardly used. Lovely phone to hold, very slick operations, loads of features and probably i have only discovered a fraction. As regards my main fear the typing ......... its getting there.
Another concern was linking to Bluetooth in the car, paired with my E92 this morning no problem so just need to try the X5. Given it is newer and with idrive etc I can't see it being a problem there.
All very happy so far, except the wife is looking at it with longing eyes so there may need to be another one bought soon!

On my 3GS:-
Work email is Exchange based and deleting off phone will delete it off the server at work.
Home email is gmail (pop3) and even if I delete off phone, it will download at home using 'Mail'.

Will see tonight when I get home and put on the laptop whether mails deleted on phone will still go through, think they probably won't which would be good.

Roger ...... my wife is on pay as you go so ready for an upgrade anytime soon!! Think the card may get another hit soon especially as her birthday is in a few weeks.

If you have the latest ios on the phone then you can have the gmail setup the same as your exchange.

Add the account in the exchange section using m.google.com as the server

davyk - Yahoo used to charge to imap/exchange settings but I think it might be free now?? If so then you can do the same as above, setup from the exchange section on the phone and use m.yahoo.com as the server. Not sure if it will work due to it actually being btinternet though.
