yep, Roger is correct - Nissan also stated the GTR couldn't be modded due to the ecu encryption they used.

TG mag did an article a while back on all the modders who love a challenge and of course smashed the encryption to bits....

My god Palmnuts your worse than me for swapping cars!

Ok, i had a GT-R from new early last summer and got rid of it just before Xmas.
If your looking at ultimate performance without spending huge amounts then theres really nothing to touch it.
For a few hundred quid a Cobb access port and Y pipe will get you close to 600HP. I did this and the car was absolutely monstrous with 0-60 times of under 3.5sec. Thats a time many 6 figure cars cant match.
The gearbox was good and fast and shoved you in the back when changing up.
MPG - i was averaging 19/20 which isnt too bad for that kind of car.

The downsides for me was the size of it - just too long and wide for my use and parking wasnt easy in tight spaces.
Its also a car that doesnt really come alive until your at the national speed limit.
When cold its very kangaroo-like and the brakes in stop/start traffic had a terrible squeal which was hugely embarrassing.

Pretty expensive to run with tyres costing 600 EACH and only available from Nissan HPC's. I think Bridgestone did them cheaper but at the time they were extremely rare and almost impossible to get hold of.
Minor scuffs could be costly to fix too and servicing every 6 months/6000 miles (plus its initial 1200 mile optimisation service) is pretty frequent.

Oh the the Bose system was crap!

Its is a great car but the negatives finally made me get rid of it.
As a second/weekend car, it would be a keeper.

I was looking at a low miles 09 GTR and ended up going with a 997S2. GTR is a nice car but I wanted a lighter car and the 911 has it by over 700lbs.

LOL!!! If you mean a 997 C2S then Ive owned both and trust me a 997 C2S and the GT-R are planets apart in terms of peformance - i found the 997 hugely disappointing in terms of power. If you mean a 997 Turbo, esp one fitted with X50 pack well then its a closer call.
Also, i would understand your comment about "weight" if it meant that due to the GT-R's weight it was underpowered and under delivered - (for example the VW R32 is far too heavy due to the 4x4 system and constantly feels woefully underpowered) but you would never know the GT-R weighs what it does without reading the figures in the print.

Sounds familiar,...Mrs Yves was scared to death of my 911 too but loved the M3 and various loony Bikes Ive owned.
