Camera question

I see everyone posting great pics of their cars and I was curious what kind of camera you all use. I have a Nikon Coolpix S1 but it doens't cut it, it's low on features, and their are very few manual settings. What do you guys use/recommend?

If you want good shots outta a small digi, get a Canon Digital Elph. I've had three over the years and all of em' work great. Good Colors, decent features, and all smaller than a pack of smokes.

Right now though I am thinking about getting a Leica D-Lux 3. Supposed to have good glass and a decent processor.

Currently using an older Canon SD500, and a Canon Digital Rebel SLR. Both are decent. The Rebel gives you a whole lot more flexibilty and new and exciting ways to screw up your pictures.

Cannot go wrong with Canon or Nikon though.

If your looking to really get into photography, might as well invest in a beginers DSRL (xti, d40) and learn by doing. Thats what i did

Just found this section of the forums!

I use a Nikon D200 and Pro glass. Mainly 17-55F2.8 and also 70-200 F2.8 VR (Which is a fantastic lens)

I'm in the middle of being an avid amateur and potentially moving pro in a few years!

I'm also on a hunt for a relatively small point and shoot camera. I use a D70s but sometimes it's just too big to carry around hence the hunt for a smaller P & S. Pretty much narrowed it down to a Canon but there are so many models to choose from. Looking for one that has manual mode and relatively long range zoom.

+1 to something like the d40. it will give you plenty of room to grow as you get more experience with it.

But remember, what gear you use plays only a small part in the quality of the images you produce. Most of the magic happens behind the eyepiece, i.e. from your eyeball through your brain. Stepping up to a dSLR will allow you to learn depth of field, among other things, which will then allow you to become more artistic. At that point, you're only limited by your own creativity. Develop your "eye," then look to upgrade your gear.

[b]slim[b] -- in a compact p&s, no matter what you're going to be limited in the reach of the lens. Most cameras tout specs like "4x optical, 40x digital zoom!" If all you care about is posting pics on the web, then maybe that will work. But from my experience, digital zoom is junk. Optical zoom actually is a measure of the reach of the glass in the camera. Obviously, in a tiny little p&s, you can't fit much glass in there, hence the need for the processor to invent what it sees beyond the reach of the actual camera.

I know dSLRs can be bulky, but there really is no substitute.

Just my $0.02. Most importantly, have fun!

I just bought my wife (me) a Canon Rebel XT kit for our anniversary tomorrow. "I'm going to Disneyland!!!!" I love the fact that I can go get all sorts of glass for this baby, and still download/edit the pictures without the cost of negatives.
What's up with "speed" ratings for the SD cards? Did I get ripped on that? I bought the recommended "ExtremeIII" 2GB card for about $50.

The speed ratings are how fast the CF cards are rated. You're using CF cards if you have a Rebel XT. Check this thread out for good prices on CF cards. There should be a link to slickdeals in there that has a whole list of CF cards for great prices..
