Tail light Wiring Short

The drivers side tail light of my son's 2004 325i quit working. We thought it might have been a bulb so we pulled the inner bulb housing out and checked the bulbs. All looked to be in good shape.

I unplugged the unit from the wiring harness and in doing so saw that one of the wires had shorted out in the harness. It burned up the area around the one wire in the housing and pretty much burned up the post in the light unit.

Anyone seen this before? Got any idea on how it happened? The unit is dry and no moisture is in the light unit.

I guess we need a new harness and light housing. Any place other than the dealer for parts?

ps. Checking ebay but so far have only found the outer tail light lenses for sale.
