This can have a large effect. Admiral ask: Please enter a description of your job in the space provided (e.g. 'Clerk', 'Student', 'Retired', 'Unemployed' or 'Housewife') we will then try and find a match on our system.

I would probably put IT Manager as that describes what I do. I am a director though & if I put that in then the premium goes up by 82!

They do ask for description though, not job title...
There's a useful little tool on MSE that you can see what a job title does to an insurance quote, you can tweek your job title so it still means the same thing but can cost less.

For instance if insurance cost 600 in declaring 'unemployed' when not working change it to 'housewife/househusband' and it drops to 555.

Why an earth would you declare options fitted at factory as modifications?

As far as i'm concerned mods are those you do aftermarket ie non bmw parts.

Because if the robbing feckers ask you to, and you don't, guess they may not pay out

You would have thought that they'd just do it from the car's value though?

It's just crazy ... they just want to get more money out of you.

If you speak to Admiral on the phone they say mods include optional extras fitted to the car when built whereas Aviva say these don't need to be mentioned?

If they ask about mods and you don't mention the factory fitted options you can bet they will try and wriggle out of a claim.

I get a quote with myself as the only driver the premium is 350 more than if I add the Mrs as an additional driver (even though she has two claims against her)?

How do they quote for insurance ... beats me!

I think most insurers follow this technique:

All to do with risk The assume someone in a relationship is not going to be racing about as much as a single fella! Works with me as the g/f doesn't like it when the back end comes out

My g/f has had her licence for 1 year 11 months. If I added her on now then premium goes by by 160. If I wait a month so she's had it for 2 years & add her then, it goes up by 4

Makes about as much sense as the 135 discount I got from adding my dad as a named driver!

I just had my renewal in and was actually pleasantly surprised for a change. With all the hipe around Insurance costs going up I was thinking it would go up...... Don't suppose 360 is bad at all. :-)

Anything not fitted to the car when it was registered is a mod.

Though to be fair you'll not have a problem with any OE part even if retrofitted. Just as long as nothing is third party..

Completely agree. Never declared an optional extra to any insurance company in my 25 years of driving. Otherwise you'd be declaring metallic paint to insurers - who does that?

AIUI the insurers are able to identify exactly how the car came off the production line by its VIN - which makes absolute sense.

I have, and will only ever, declare aftermarket modifications.
