320d efficient dynamics edition new wheels

Hi guys

I am going to upgrade the wheels on my 320d ed, got a set of 189 18" wheels, just need some advice on tyre size, I have been told 225 40 18 front, and 255 35 18 rear, non rft.

Because the car is lower then a normal se, do you think I should stick with those? Or go 245 40 18 on the rear?

By the way it's a saloon if that makes any difference

I am doing the same to one of our 320EDs this week and puting on the Msport wheels, with the tyre sizes you suggest - that will give the correct rolling radius.

The car wont sit any lower. The rolling radius of 205/55/16, 225/45/17, 225/40/18 & 255/35/18 are all within millimetres.

ok wheels are on, look much better, driving is a bit twitchy, but think the tyres are just running in, also might need to play with PSI a bit (30/36), but holds the road much better, no problems with size or rubbing:

russtic - yeah it was the one that was on order, lol, will change it when I stop feeling so lazy

just a quick update, so tyre fitters but 34 all round, and that made the car handle like a dog, so then tried 32 front and 38 rear, still a little scatty, finally done 30 front and 36 rear, and now the car is spot on, I know everyone likes it different, but 30/36 is defo worth trying if you are doing the same

Hi there,
Wheels and the car looks nice, however I feel that I need to point out a potential issue that you will have since you have changed the wheels. Nothing to do with the handling, ride or anything mechanical............DVLA and your Vehicle Licence Value.

The original wheels, tyres etc where all part of the packaging that enabled BMW to get the car to be registered with a 109g/km CO2 rating. So potentially when you come to MOT your car in 3 years time not having the original wheels and tyres (probably a low rolling resistance premium brand) may fall you foul and fail the MOT or have you pay a higher VED.

Sorry to be a kill joy - especially on my 1st post. But on that basis I'd make sure I kept the original wheels for such an occassion.

GMS, I thought the emission figure used for VED banding is the "as manufactured" number.Your VED band is not affected by mods (including engine mods such as remaps etc).

Nice car and congratulations.

GMS interesting opinion. Never heard of a similar issue.

Toxicnerve - as far as my experience goes I have not had any emissions related issues with mapped cars with other modifications, only with decat pipes which were easy to revert to standard. Then again I've not owned many cars which have required MOT.

As I said, I am pretty sure that the emissions figure used for VED banding is the emissions figure that the car leaves the factory with.

Any mods/tuning you then subsequently do to the car has no effect on this. What I am unsure of is if what difference something like a complete engine swap may or may not make....

Poggy, see what you started? lol, sorry I will keep the ED wheels, but have some 17" msports for sale

As for the emissons issue, I think there is just a upper limit, and your car needs to be within it, I dont think the 109g/km can be inforced, I mean that reading is an average over X amount of driving in certain conditions, and the car being new, if every MOT had to recreate that it would cost alot more, and take a lot more time, and if you expect your car to be putting out 109g/km after 10 years of wear or tear?

IRC last time I had the Mot emissons test, the car is stationary, and they just rev the car up/leave to idle, so at that point the wheel size wont make any difference
