BMW Bike Carrier - hydraulic

I bought one of these for my folks about 10 years ago, and for a number of reasons it is now in my possesion.

I had never actually used it before, but tried it yesterday and I am very impressed - basically it works by fixing a clamp/bar on top of the bike bars/saddle, then inserting this it into an arm on the rack which clamps onto a pre-loaded hydraulic ram. This then lifts the bike up with literally zero effort, onto the car roof. It glides down in the same way. Very clever.

I can't remember the exact price, but it was about EUR600 in 1999/2000 I think, for 2 bikes & the aero bars.

So new they are a bit steep - but if you see one second hand - I wouldn't hesitate to buy it.

Hi Steve, I remember - have you used them yet? I'm still on the same 452s I replaced them with.

Life here is good - we live about 2km from 100km+ of wooded mountain bike trails, only snag being they are up a 1:6 hill thats 0.5km long - hence chucking the bikes on the roof (of course I'd be up for doing the hill but I'm thinking of the wife).

I was invited to meet some local petrol heads for a coffee yesterday in the next village - check out what some of them turned up in (the black car next to the cobra is a Ferrari 330 GTC, also a Dino, 308 and 365 Daytona in attendance)

Maybe - but you wouldn't think it. Feels just like any other bit of rural France - day to day all you see are the usual citroens, pugs & renaults. Infact thinking about it I've been here 8 months and had not seen a Ferrari around here until yesterday....

I was quite surprised to be honest - very friendly bunch though. The yellow porsche was a very close RUF CTR Yellowbird replica and was in amazing condition.
