just wondering if anyone here used that oil. I went to to a shop today and asked for an oil change, request mobil 1 syn. They didn't have it, They only have Royal Purple. They said I have to wait but I was in a hurry so I said I would call or go back another day.
So is Royal purple good for our 3s?

any oil is good for 3-series. and Royal Purple is probably better then M1

I wouldn't run Royal Purple in a daily driver. Yes it is designed to be used in harsh conditions such as racing, but it really isn't that great for daily driving. That was told to me by a Royal Purple engineer.

As far as I know Mobil 1 is actually the crappiest oil there is. I read lots of post that Mobil 1 downgraded their synthetic oil from Class IV to Class III which is not really a fully synthetic any more. I read that Castrol and Royal Purple are still Class IV oils, AMSOIL being the best since its Class IV or even V

I used M1 alot, but probably will switch to Castrol...not that it really matters, but read lots of BS on Mobil1

EDIT: Mobil1 5w30 is Class III, 0w40 is Class IV ...... thats what pips say < not 100%,but confirmed this and its true
EDIT: Only German made Castrol is Class IV, others are also Class III. Redline oil is Class V

if your car is still under a warranty, use an LL-01 approved oil, because bmw can void the warranty if you don't.

If your car is out of warranty (or you don't care), you can use whatever you want.

I been using royal purple since 10K and now it about 55k+. The dealer has no issue when they changed my oil.

I exclusively use castrol edge with syntec (used to be called castrol syntec)... royal purple branded itself as a high performance oil and did a good job as it sounds kinda cool "royal purple"...it's not necessarily better oil.

Moving beyond the LL-01 zealotry, my 335i was my first ever car I have never used Royal Purple in.

I have seen the test results and RP came out at the top with "less wear" on engine internals over the recomended LL-01 oils. If you want proof google is your best friend so dont ask me for it cause I am not trying to convince anyone -(indirectly speaking to Trackrat)

The recomended Royal Purple for a 335i is as follows:

• Purple SAE 5W30 (Part # 01530 quart bottle)
• or SAE 10W30 (Part # 01130 quart bottle)

If you want the BEST RP for your 335i then it would be this:

• Royal Purple XPR 5W30 (Part # 01021 quart bottle).

OP to answer your question, BMW LL01 oil simply means any oil that has a certification of ACEA A3B3+, or API SJ+. Look for any of those two, anywhere on the label, and enjoy the ride!

Yep, but it'll be a different story if you have a lubrication related issue. At that point you'll be required to prove that you used approved fluids for all work.

Feel free to use dishwater mixed with sawdust in your engine. Just don't come back here and whine when your warranty claim is denied.

Then ask yourself why you were so stupid as to not use LL-01 oil while you were under warranty.

I use to be able to buy a 55 gallon drum of 5W-30 for cheap. There wasn't much of a discount on buying cases of quarts thought. I have seen it as high as $9 a quart in some stores.

XR, HPS, and the regular RP. Remember Royal Purple is from Texas, and one of their offices is here in Houston. We ended up purchasing some of their other products, but when it came to motor oil we stuck with Castrol and Valvoline (for the diesels).

As someone who has dealt with manufacturers including field engineers for warranties and vehicle failures I can tell you that using anything but what the manufacturer says to put in your engine will only create more headaches in the long run.

I used Royal Purple in my race truck, but it saw oil changes after every event.
