Could you cite which engine? Not being a dick or sarcastic, but I really would like to know. My experience with honda is limited to the D and B series. The reason I say it makes no sense is this: a cast piston is far more likely to break/wear prematurely than a cast crank. Infact, cast crankshafts(unless there is a design flaw or manufacturing problem) are usually good for well over 600hp and hard driving. A cast piston can fail within a few hundred miles of exposure to excessive knock. A whole forged piston set is also much cheaper than a forged crank. Why spend big bucks on a part that is much less likely to fail, but try and save money on a cheaper part that experiences a lot more stress?

lol...this thread is to damn much

Prime example of how rumors get started.

Good thing I not only have the sport package but I also have the M sport package....which got the titanium valve spring package and the anthracite manifold coating.

I agree with the OP that we need a bit more clarification/proof. With that said I still would believe 3 different reputable shops word, compared to some parts look up boy.

no no no ...no one knows anything about build dates for sure...just wild speculation. It is highly unlikely that BMW would have started putting cast internals in place of forged in the middle of an engine run.

There is a difference between the N54 and N55 internals though. That we already knew.

My car is not late 2009, it's late 2008 (October 2008 built). There are only 2 piston part numbers ever used in the N54 engine, and I have the first part number, the same as the early models, because the second part number begun to be used a year after my car was built.

Why do you say that? As enrita said in the first page of this thread there are two piston numbers according to realoem.com, and the first one "ended" in 07/2007. If you choose anything after this date, it does not display the ended piston number at all.

Couldnt tell you for sure but ill text my buddy who has built some pretty crazy boosted honda motors that used to own a shop around here and get back at you with the cranks that were forged.

So the reason they changed from forged to cast in the middle of production was to keep people from running insane boost, which they knew was possible with forged pistons. Now cast pistons are now put into all of the motors (1m 335is & 335i)so that if you run excessive amounts of boost your warranty will be voided.

Just to be clear no one has proof that either part number is cast, but we do have proof the the earlier piston is forged. So the later piston may be forged......or not??
