Oil Level on an Approved Used BMW?

Hi Guys,

Picked up my Sapphire Black 320 MSport on Thursday. It's a fantastic drive - just love it. I'm coming from Toyota Celica's, and a Honda Civic Hybrid so it's a different level of refinement for me.

Anyway, I checked the oil level of the car, and although it says it's ok, it's quite near the empty mark. Should I be worried about this? More importantly, shouldnt the dealer have notified me of this, or it come up on on their pre delivery inspection check?

The 'bars' show the oil level between the max and min 'dashes'. So your oil level is closer to the min than the max, but still OK.

Strictly speaking I think you are meant to wait for the last bar to vanish before topping up - with 1 small bottle of oil (1 litre - I think)

If you top up now it will be difficult to know how much to add.

Since the oil is slightly pricy you could mention this to the dealer and try to get him to stump up a free bottle. Or like me you might find out that there is already one in a little zip up bag in the boot.

The cars only done 5k miles so isn't that much oil consumption a bit excessive?

Also, what oil should I be putting in here when the need arises?

thanks

I think they all burn through around a litre of oil in the 1st 10,000 miles, mine needed a top up around 7,000 and has held steady since then.

The oil specification is in the manual.

As you've only just taken delivery I'd be back to get them to at least provide the oil for topping off.

Fair enough the manual might say wait until it's reached the lower mark before topping up, but you shouldn't have to go out and spend £15+ on oil within days of buying.

This is true, but if it were a car with a standard dipstick and the oil level was between the max and min would you expect the garage to top it off?

At half way or higher probably not, but at nearing the minimum yes. Though I'd try and get a top up out of them to top it up in stages myself to avoid overfilling as they'd probably just get it wrong.

I have mentioned this to the dealer and he will speak to his service department. I don't mind paying for the oil myself, but I will be a bit miffed if this was supposed to be rectified as part of their 'approved used' checks.

They mentioned that if any service is required in the next 4k miles then they do that. Considering the car has used up 3/4 of the oil (between min/max level) in 5k miles, that would make topping up the oil a priority.

you have to rememeber that the engine has something like 5-7 litres of oil in it, and the difference between those two markers is just a few good glugs... but yes in a new car i'd want it topped up...

ours has done a litre over 6k, not to bad. Some people have done a litre in 1500 miles so i wouldnt unduly worry.

add aroudn 100ml then you will have topped up enough and wont risk over filling her

Assuming, of course, it was ever at maximum...

To me it's a tolerance, so for it to be spot on I'd want it bang in the middle. As long as it's between min and max, it's fine - why does it need topping up

Relax, enjoy your new car...

I'm at 15,000 miles ... The 1st litre went in around 7,000 miles, it dropped 1 dash soon after, but seems to be steady since 10,000 miles.

Dealer has finally responded and says that the oil level is fine - even though it's near the minimum mark, it's within tolerances. I'm a bit annoyed that i'd have to put oil in the car after only having it a couple of weeks, but it's not the end of the world.

Are there any recommended oils I should use?

Thanks
