i recently checked out my metallic ticking noise at the BMW of Bakersfield dealer, and they said they had this new protocol. The.. AHV? Or something.. where they flush out the air from the HVs or something. They did that to my car, and it doesn't do it anymore.. yet.. i guess i can keep that updated.

I just took my car in for the ticking noise, I was advised after they diagnosed it that it is a normal sound, the loaner I had did (328I) did not have that noise and they simply said that there are 3 diff engines that BMW made for this car and not all the same, I listened to another 325I on their lot and had ticking noise too, so I am confused, they are telling me that it is normal and nothing is wrong, while "ages944" dealer had replaced his lifters, so I am confused as to what to do next, any ideas? SHould I take ages944 thread and show it to them?

oh, forgot, they said that they did 'bleed' the valves, what ever that means, but it didn't help.

Dude fight it, I had that issue and I was ontop of it, I had lawyers call BMW headquaters and all. It is an issue. BMW bought my car back and gave me a 07 335. Dont let them tell you it is not a problem, because it is, they just dont want to do nothing about it. Keep on fighting and harass them.

It's going back on the 30th for the replacement of the 3M clear bra as it dulled out on me a year later and I am bringing this issue back up again and showing them bits and peices of this thread as it may wake them up. They keep teling me that they've never heard complaints on this and BMW never brought it to them as a concern ( as in the OE tires ) but after reading this thread from start to finish, I can't believe that I am the only one in the area that brought this up, strange.

Oh btw, they had to replace the steering column due to it locking up on me and getting me an error sign in the dash, now when I take off with windows closed I hear a hissing sound coming from behind the dash on the driver's side like a vaccum leak when I accelerate, they're telling me that's normal too and always been there, i was in a hurry but taking it back for tht too, tired of hearing "that's normal" crap.

LittleBlue,

The 325i, 328i, and 330i all use the same engine, with only minor differences between them, none of which have anything to do with the lifters. If you've got a 325i which ticks, you should work to have them take care of the problem. If let go long enough, the ticking noise could end up damaging the camshafts themselves.

My 06' 330i ticks as well. I first took it to the dealer a few months ago and i believe i was the first one there with the ticking. I was unable to duplicate it when i took the car in for service but luckily when i picked it up, the engine was ticking loudly so I ran inside and grabbed a tech. They ended up changing all 12 exhaust lifters. The engine sounded fine for a month or so but it started ticking again....... exactly the same as before. Sometimes very loudly and sometimes average. I was at the dealer today who told me BMW is making a new cylinder head for that motor but it wasnt out yet. I was told to check around in 2months for the new head tho now im reading that one of the members here already has the new head. Grrrr... dealers... i tell ya. Why cant we ever get a straight answer from them.

The dealer told me to rev the car to 3500 rpms for 5mins get the rid of the ticking sound if it happens at start. I dont think i like the sound of that on my 40k car. Does anyone actually have the service bulletin for the new cylinder head?

I Was The One That They Replaced The Cylinder Head. Even It Was The New Cylinder Head, The Car Wasnt Right. In The Morning When I Would Start Up The Car It Will Idle Very Rough To The Point Where The Car Felt Like If It Was I Sa Earthquake. I Took It Back To Them And They Told Me It Was A New Part And That It Had To Settle In, I Gave Them Time To See If It Would Settle. It Didnt So They Finally Replaced The Car And Gave Me A New One. It Is A Known Issue With Bmw, Do Research, And Call Costomer Relations And Call And Harrass Them Tell Them You Got Lawyers Working On It And All. Trsut Me They Will Act Up On It. Just Dont Take No For An Answer, I Didnt Just Fight And In The End You Will Win. I Know I Did =)

uh he was kidding right ?

WTF ^ is that shit ???

reving a cold engine is bad, maintaining 3500rpm on a cold engine is bad, beating an engine more to supposidly stop the ticking will only make things worse.

*shrug*

ppp

p.s. wonder what other words of wisdom he's suggested

*** Update *** Many thanks to Miami Bimmer06 and Ages944, I gathered some info from here and droveover to the dealer today, unless you all just got hired yesterday there is no way on earth that you have never heard of this issue with these cars, that's bull....the SA reffered me to the shop foreman who listened then confessed that a BMW IS AWARE of the issue and are working on a redesign, basically a new head! Which would include all form the cam shaft and up, then he said he doesn't know any further and he should not be telling me this, so he said let's go talk to the SM, he also confesed that a new head has been re-designed and is only available to those that do complain, no recall will take place, after listening to the car, he agreed to take the car in for a new head to include cam, lifters and so on.....IF YOU HAVE DONE ONLY LIFTERS then you only got the job half done, they all wear out together, it's like trying to seat a fat person in a little chair, it can't be done, so press it and get it done withthe dealers, they will do it now although they first said that it may not be availfor a couple more months.

Thanks for the info Little Blue. Helpful to know. I remember MiamiBimmer talking about the new head (poor oil lubrication in the old head), but it's good to know that they'll replace the head if the car ticks. My car's been relatively tick free over it's life, but I think that I will have to rip into 'em a bit the next time it starts ticking.

MiamiBimmer: Thanks for the info on the vibrating car. I've been bringing this up at every single visit (it's been getting worse/more often with time). I think I may try to pursue this issue further.

Potty_Pants: While I agree that it may not be the best thing for the engine, I can say that revving the snot out of the engine does often help the tick go away, in my personal experience. Did it a few times myself. Granted, I let the car warm up first, but revving it gets more oil running through the head, and by extension into the lifters, and in a relatively short amount of time. Now, I wouldn't really recommend this as any sort of fix, only expressing my experiences. Your mileage may vary.

yes the service rep told me to rev the engine to quickly force the oil thru to get rid of the ticking as a temporary fix. There better be a service bulletin coming out in a few months with the new head. This is a hell of a design flaw for a BMW motor which is rated so highly. Not to mention the premium $$$ we already pay for a BMW over another car in the same class.

So apparently there is a service bulletin about the ticking.
I took my car in this morning because in P cold start, when the rpm is about 500, i hear the ticking very clearly, then put in R or D, no sound, then back to P, ticking starts again.
I mentioned this to the foreman, he says "is this a metallic ticking?", I said, "yeap", He said, "actually there is a service bulletin about this. the oil is not getting up there, this is how hydraulic valve lifters work".

Then, he tells me that he had worked on cars that ticked "very loud", that unless the ticking is still there when i get like 15k or 20k miles, bring back and get the head replaced. He also says that for the cars with the cylinder head replaced, the tick returned.

He also pointed out that early production of '06 330i had this problem. Mine is a July 06 production. "Not worry too much".

So what they did was to bleed the valve lifters. "hold rpm at 3k for 5 min".

i will be on vacation soon, he replied "the tick will return, because the oil has to get from the pan to the lifters."

That's all folks.

5 weeks ago I brought my car in and did the bleeding SIB. It did help a bit, but the ticking sound comes back after 2 weeks. Last week I brought it in again, and I also mentioned the ticking is getting louder and car is starting vibrating. They still only did the SIB. Soon or later I am sure the ticking will come back and I will be on my third visit. What should I do? It's just wasing time!

Interesting - it says to rev the engine and then listen again.
