Here is what a aftermarket key looks like. It doesn't have a water seal or a rechargable battery. Also it has a PCF7941 instead of a PCF7945. |

Monday I am going to a locksmith to have my metal key cut. I also want to get a price on how much they would charge if I needed a full key and how much to program one of my refurbished keys.

Update: In a moment of poor judgment I dropped $800 on the BMW multi tool. This is the safest programmer for our cars. This will allow me to program keys via OBD2 in 10 minutes. My CA key arrived today it has a different chip, PCF7953. Looks like my CA key will be on hold for a bit longer. I went to a locksmith to get a quote on how much it would be to get a new fob if I didn't have a keylab in my basement and he said he couldn't do it. I wanted to also get my metal key cut but he said it was $35. I am not paying a BMW tax so I walked out. I am going to call around to see if someone will do it at the normal $5-$10 rate.
Keys will be made by the end of the week. |

The Hitag2 and R270 will still work and I will make a guide on how to use them but this works through ODB2, removing the possibility of damaging the CAS while soldering. |

I've been watching, and am curious, since you have a CAS2, whether or not your approach would work. I think it will for CAS2, because I haven't seen anything about SOPT update for CAS2. I could be wrong, and CAS2 unit's may have also have had updated firmware. The Multitool should work well. But there is always some risk. I purchased an original FVDI, and used it to program keys for my car. I thought I could subsidize the cost, by leasing it out. But, I quickly realized that it's not all that simple, and there is a real amount of risk involved in using these tools, so I've decided against trying to use it on anyone else's car. I paid a UK locksmith $350 for the tool, and programmed 7 keys for my car(2 CA, 2 Remote, and 3 Emergency), so I figure I got my money out of it. Also, I'm assuming that the forum you spoke of in the OP, was Digital Kaos? If it's not, the locksmith forum on Digital Kaos is an excellent resource, BUT remember that these are professional locksmiths who make their living being locksmiths. They will help other professional locksmiths, but can take offense of non-locksmiths taking money away from locksmiths. So, I always made a point that I had tried to find a local locksmith to help, but couldn't find one, whenever I posted there.

A forum member is sending me his water damaged key. I am transplanting the chip onto a used blank key. As long as the PCF7945 did not get damaged it should work the same. The BMW multitool comes Friday and the R270 comes Saturday. I think I am just going to resell the R270 and the Hitag. Last edited by Nickco43; 07-11-2018 at 09:55 AM.. |

Good and bad news. I programmed the aftermarket key and it starts the car but it will not unlock the doors. I am not sure what is wrong.

I am not done yet. Once I get the HiTag tool I can see if I can fix 3srsntswngr's water damaged key.
My PO lost one of my CA keys so I bought a used CA key and I have a new CA key chip on order. Then I can clone key 2. I believe I would be the first person to have a working CA non dealer key. |

There is a e60 at the junkyard. I am going to pull the cas module and start the $100 key programming diy with the R270 and the Hitag2.

url=https://postimg.cc/image/yt9jw91e9/][/url] I am having difficulty using the R270. I am going to some trouble shooting before I throw in the towel. I hope I can get it working since that would be a really affordable way for people to make new keys for their car. I ordered CA key chips and will be making one more key before I sell the BMW multi tool. I was thinking of renting the tool out but I am not sure on how to protect myself from someone bricking their CAS. Update: As of 1AM I have not been able to get the R270 to work with the CAS3+. I am not sure if it is user error, drivers or the programmer is defective. If someone on DK knows what is wrong I will try and see if it will work but as of now it is not necessary to continue with experiment. The Hitag and the new batteries have cleared US customs are should be here in a few days. I have yet to determine if soldering blank chips to a used key will allow it to be programmed. If it works I will have three, blank OEM non CA keys that I will sell with the BMW Multi Tool. The DIY for the multi tool is released in the DIY section of the forum. If you are like my neighbors and own five white X3's then I would not hesitate to drop $800 on the multi tool and save thousands instead of going to the dealer. If you just need a lost key replaced find a locksmith who specializes in making BMW keys. Most locksmith's won't even touch our cars. Hell I can't even get a damn metal key cut.
