Sucks to see this happen. Does anyone know who makes the RB turbos hardware? Are they just custom chinese sourced stuff? I bet it is.
Greddy turbos are Mitsubishi turbos and they are pretty stout if not overworked. I have an upgraded T618Z on my RX-8. +2 for Borgwarner EFR, a 7670 will be going on my RX-8 after summer.

Haha, technically yes.
Even though it was under warranty, still cost Advan time in the whole process and cost me shipping both ways. |

It might interest the camper's to know that every set of RB's installed at Advan Performance have smoked.
Thats a 100% failure rate. And where's Rob Beck in all this? To date he hasn't responded to my email. Customer service and standing by your product....NOT.

The real failure of RB turbo's in Oz is far higher than I have managed to piece together so far as many have not put their hand up. Many are known behind the scenes but remain tight lipped. Wonder why?
Perhaps it's down to some strange notion that Rob will look after people who have bought what is quite clearly a defective product. Personally I won't stump up cash all over again to have them rebuilt by RB into some other version of the same crap. There are at least 3 sets of turbo's and their owners who have had them fail a second time to my knowlege. Given that its around $6000 to buy and install them in Oz you'd have to say that 13 x $6000 = $78,000 is a poor investment in a performance product that doesn't actually perform for more than a few thousand Km's. And now, like everyone on the list, I have to find more of my hard earned to do over. Which means another $6000! Plus! Depending on my next decision. So my turbo upgrade without other supporting mods will have swallowed $12,000! A potential collective $156,000! So far?! And counting. No add that to the smokey results in the USA to the real Australian number and it's a no wonder that Mr. Rob Beck has his head in the sand.I believe there was a group action against RB in the land of litigation but not sure of the outcome. Questions were raised years ago now about the providence of the turbo cartridge which was, maybe still is sourced out of Taiwan. You end up with the wheel slopping back and forth under boost which allows oil past the seals (someone can get more technical here if they want).

Issue is smoke pouring out the exhaust blinding the drivers behind you. Due oil getting past the seals and hitting the hot exhaust If you are thinking of getting aftermarket turbos is up to you, there are lots of people who have had problems and lots who have none. That said RB turbos have a bad rep for failing/smoking, just saying |

What model were they? Were they the TD03 or TD04 centre section offering? Who was your supplier? JD75? Did he assist in anyway, I feel you guys have been slightly unfair. Did you upgrade every other essential part? Inlets and outlets? Downpipes? How safe were the parameters of the tune..? I think you should have contacted Rob first, instead of creating a thread of this nature. I am non biased I don't own a pair, everything in life has teething problems, instead you guys seem to have just pointed the finger. From research within the last 2 years they have had no issues with there range. Yet again this thread was so vague and didn't help any one at all if making an informative decision on upgrades

This stuff is about as old as the hills and is based entirely over RB Classic Produced between 2010-2014.
We continually ship at LEAST 3 sets of turbos per week and have since 2010. We service 0-2 sets of turbos per month, and at any given moment we have 0 sets to service on hand. This is all inclusive from all sold since 2010, which is literally in the thousands of units. We have reached out to the OP of this thread and JD75- over the past year or two- offering refurbishments and/or buybacks of any other RB Classic Turbos that maybe out in Aussie land. We have not been able to find a set that are available, or in need, of overhaul- to date. For some accurate "rep", meaning not from a case from some customers in say 2010-2014, some may want to google "RB Turbo Reliability update stats" and review the thread that pops up. We'd bet any amount of $$$, that there is NO other vendor offering turbos for the N54 that is demonstrating the quality in builds that we have seen proven over the past couple years, and if they are then congrats to them for the 0% failure rate as well. Thanks, Rob Last edited by Rob@RBTurbo; 05-16-2018 at 09:29 AM.. |

It would be good to gather a list of people running the new turbos to show that they dont have problems or not as the case may be.

This thread is two years old As Rob points out the reliability of his product has improved since the release of his classic range. People did have smoking problems, me inciuded. Mine were posted back to Rob and rebuilt. Whole exercise left me out of pocket several thousand dollars for removal, shipping and reinstallation for no fault of my own so naturally people at the time were a little pissed. Especially given the turbos failed with only a few thousand Km on them. Wasn’t just one or two people either, it was more like 1 in 3 as hightlighted in this thread. While Rob did the right thing and repaired the units, people still had to stump up large out of pocket $$ to get their turbos fixed and understandably were pretty dirty. RB Turbo rep was dirt as a result. Throw on top this the blame was leveled at tunes, install problems or lack of oil change and other excuses was just an insult given the number and frequency of failures... This messy and unfortunate period for the N54 community is behind us and the world has moved on. RIP Last edited by Socket; 05-16-2018 at 05:23 PM.. |
