Well, I just checked The Southern Daily Echo (Southampton's newspaper), and I can see no evidence, at least, of any event in that area or near the port that might have caused any delays (ex. fire, strike, etc.). I only got to wondering when I noticed there are several ships that went into port about the same time as the DJ who are still in port, and oddly enough too, doesn't it seem like few, if any ships are moving in or out of Port Southampton? Maybe I'm just not checking often enough, but I didn see several other ships that seem to be "stuck" in port also... My .02...
Fletch!

Ok...perhaps my previous observation wasn't a very good one. I notice 7 ships still in port that were there when we started this thread. 4 of those are in and around the same pier where the DJ is. Another 3 ships are moving, one of which has been there for a few days, and is leaving port. So...ummmm....nevermind.

Don't ask me why I'm up at this hour (3:45am), but I'm having one of those rare nights when I couldn't sleep very well, and all I could muster were some tosses and turns. I'll poop out again in a bit...
Decided to meander to my computer to check on the DJ since her departure time had passed some 30 minutes prior to my waking. Looked on aislive.com, and she was still shown sitting at the pier. I then checked aislive's ship movements to see when she was scheduled out, but she wasn't listed. Good new or terrible news? GOOD NEWS!!! She's on her way here (see attached - upper left corner, in the channel). Ok....I'm going back to my bed...hopefully to fall asleep. EDIT: Changed the size of the image so it would fit reasonably well on most current-day resolutions (I hate horizontal scrolling just to read text...made worse when I create it).

Nice - here we come Halifax!!
Here are a couple of links I dug up when researching Halifax: This first link is a webcam that is pointing in southerly direction towards the entrance of Halifax Harbour and Halifax Waterfront. http://www.halifaxwebcam.ca/ This second link is of the current conditions at the Port of Halifax including a couple of webcam images. http://www.portofhalifax.ca/AbsPage....iteid=1&lang=1 |

Nice work shipmates ... looks like we'll be ready for the D J's approach into Halifax (hopefully within 7 days period)
02/18/06 14:15 EST update ... looks like she's chugging along nicely ... It should be just about dinner time on board ...

Well...I did some off the cuff calculations. According to Google Earth, the D J has travelled an estimated 125 (as the crow flies) miles or 107 nautical miles, since the 08:30 update (about 6 hours)... that would mean she's chugging along at a 'blistering' average pace of 20.8 mph ... slightly under 20 knots average speed
To put that speed into perspective: -according to the Guiness book of records, the official world water speed record is 275.8 knots set on October 8, 1978 by Kenneth Peter Warby on Blowering Dam Lake -a typical competently individually rowed row-boat travels about 1.1 knots -The $800 million Queen Mary 2's (the world's largest, longest, tallest and widest passenger ship ever conceived) is top speed is approximately 30 knots. -the e90 (ZSP equipped ) vmax speed is about 137 knots The distance from the D J's last reported position to the port of Halifax (as the crow flies) is about 2,756 miles ... that would mean the D J still has about 5-6 days of sailing before reaching Halifax...so eta 02/23 - 02/24...IF she maintains her speed/trajectory. For the same distance an e90 (330i ZSP) running at top speed would make it in under 18 hours...(not accounting fuel and potty stops)

So if my calculations hold mostly true/correct ... the D J would call on Halifax on schedule or 1 day behind schedule (not accounting for traffic, weather etc)... I guess they're really gunning her to make up for the 2 days delay in Southampton (crew on-shore excursion? ) ... good job D J... hopefully this is good news to our other nervously/excitedly waiting shipmates.

Here's the last of the AISLive images until which time DJ gets nearer the other side of the pond. Taken a couple of hours ago actually... I tried refreshing the map again a few minutes ago, but the DJ isn't on the map. She's in open waters...

If you look at my latest image, you'll notice the Don sitting to the DJ's northeast near the coast... That must be what you picked out...easy mistake though given the conjestion at times... Quote:

Hey...why don't we have everybody who's car made the Don Juan on 2/13/06 check in, and introduce yourselves. Yes, no? I'd like to see how many from this board made it onboard...
Oh...and did I mention my car finished production on my birthday? Same birthday! Fletch!
