Thanks for the suggestions guys. Not sure if I'm into the polishing, did that a bunch of years ago on a HD Softail I owned and the up keep was non stop. Might try the WD40 suggestion though, I thought about that previously and wondered if it may repel, protect against oxidation

Cool I have a sportster and eglide ultra so I know what you mean about the polishing. I still like it tho. If you wipe this stuff on every once in a while it at least won't get any worse, it leaves a film you can feel on it but not heavy like stuff is going to stick to it.

That is the key you have to get the corrosion off and start w/ a good sealed base. I haven't heard of this shineseal, thx for the tip I can't resist trying new stuff. The white diamond metal polish is supposed to have a sealer, but this you mentioned looks like a 2 step process like a ceramic paint coating. interesting

Yeah, there are a few aluminum sealers out there. I learned of them from my mini truckin days, when people were all buying billet alum. wheels and needing to seal them to keep them looking new. Everyone used to use Zoop Seal, but they went out of business and I guess this Shine seal is a new formula from the guy who made zoop seal. I'm not sure how well it works in a heated environment, but I know it used to be the shit for rims.

I see on their page "zoopseal is now shineseal", either new formula or bought out. I watched their vid it looks just like a ceramic "don't use too much just a dab and wipe it on". Pretty sure there's no way to make any metal parts on a car permanently sealed, but I'm looking for ones that'll have it looking good till after I'm dead, gonna order this and give it a try. Thx bro!

Dude with a ton of luck. That was 20 pages back and when I clicked on the thread it happened to go to the page before where I'd left off last, I skipped to most recent but then was like eh I'll go one more page forward to see what happened a month ago.

Glad you posted it though. Those aluminum hats are gorgeous--I'd never actually seen them since I never opened the package.

For shiny aluminum like alternator and OFH I use the dremel with steel and brass wire wheels and abrasive pads. I polish with white diamond polish which is supposed to have a sealer in it, but I wipe a film of WD40 Specialist corrosion inhibitor when it's detailing time.
I used the white diamond polish on my wheels.
The sealant isn't great.

next year I'm polishing them back raw without sealant and doing sharkhide on the recommendation of a trucker friend with giant polished alcoas.

it's expensive, but he says it lasts on his truck for like 6 months.

Hey guys, btw, is BMW riveting the hats on all rotors now? I noticed that on a '20 330i loaner. Used to be I think, 5 series V8 and above, hats were aluminum to save weight....

any weight savings?

I've never seen that before, interesting. The //M cars often used floating rotors to better cope with heat. This link from Textar mentions BMW: https://textar.com/en/composite-brake-discs/

It could definitely be becoming more common. Shaving rotational mass, however incremental, helps with fuel economy and has other benefits in terms of acceleration and braking. IIRC these are 2-3lbs per corner lighter than all-steel rotors. This makes a much larger difference than shaving 10lbs off, say, the engine bay.

What with the huge brakes on modern BMWs and the wide runflat tyres unsprung weight must be about double that of my E30. An alloy hat won't make much difference to rotational mass as all the savings are in the centre, but it'll certainly be better for track use because of the two piece floating design.

Some cars, such as old Jaguars and Alfas, used inboard discs on the driveshafts. Big reduction in unsprung weight but no fun to change discs.

Thanks again for the suggestions. Reading thru the description I noticed the Silicone Spray. I wonder how that would protect after cleaning up the oxidation. Used silicone spray on the chrome wheels on our cars back in the day (chrome reverse w/ baby moon's if you're old enough to remember) to protect against rain and snow.

Rear passenger window regulator. Got the part for 25 bucks. Finished in 30 minutes. The dealer would probably charge 2000 dollars. Winning.

E30 wheels and brakes are featherweights in comparison to an E90. That is why E30's are such a fun car, relatively light weight with ok hp stock and suspension that works with both.

I also ordered a little CF trim ring to go around the start button. The paint is flaking and rather than buy a whole new one or remove it and hope to paint it (don't know how hard that would be) if I can just throw a neat little CF sticker with the M colors on instead, why not?

So I apparently used way too much degreaser. There's a giant puddle of it mixed with grime right under the car (directly below where I sprayed it) and now my garage reeks of degreaser and it won't clean up easily with what I have laying around. I swear I can be a nitwit.

As we midwesterners say: ope

Oh I had my tires put on yesterday. The ones on it were worse than I'd thought. Rears were down to the wear bars. Jeebus this thing is smooth now.

You're supposed to do this outside on a cold engine and then rinse it off with a hose after it's been sitting for a few minutes.
