No DPF Regen in 16k - glow plugs?

Just had my 335d serviced and asked them to check when it last did a regen. Turns out it was 16k ago! 3 glow plugs are showing as dead but the garage didn't think that'd cause it not to regen.

Any ideas? And how long before its a problem?

I'd have thought it its not Regenerated in 16k you should have some serious issues by now! Most dpf's regen every 6-800 miles or so!
Yours should be beyond a forced regen! I'm also a little dubious about these glow plug failures causing no regens. It don't effect out vans that's for sure so suprised it will a car

What issues would I see apart from a performance drop off? I wouldn't notice if its not as fast as it should be coming from an E39 520 tourer as they are worlds apart in performance!

Seems to run well and will return high 30s MPG on a run at a "reasonable" cruising speed.

I know that on DIS the distance since regen is shown in metres not miles. I can only assume that this would be the case for the way it is shown on this other Diagnostic system that was used on your car. You would certainly have seen problems long before now if it had not regenerated since 16k miles!

I'll get it rechecked then. What problems would you expect if it wasn't performing a regen (all a bit new to me!).

You would have had a orange then red DPF warning light on the dash along time ago. Also diagnostics would have shown excessive DPF loads such as codes 480 and 480a.

I was told by BMW a few months ago that any trouble codes in the DDE would prevent a regen. However, my car is currently showing plug codes and it still regens when it should do.

Water temperature?

I would be checking water temperature - regen only occurs above 75 degrees i think - if both thermostats have failed may not be getting there. Should be achieving around 90 degrees after 15 minutes running time. Access the hidden menu to view water temperature.

When i sorted mine it was regening every 100 miles for about a month then settled down!

Mine had failure to regen, caused by a failed exhaust back pressure sensor.

The symptoms were spotlessly clean exhausts and a gradual drop off in performance at higher revs.

I had replaced both the thermostat some 3000 miles earlier and once up to speed was maintaining 90 deg. But if you're running cool then get those changed, and don't let the dealer / garage tell you they are fine cos he's left in running whilst stationery for 20 minutes and it's showing 88 deg!

Since fixed (2000 miles) I've not seen or felt any signs of it doing a regen, despite looking for it - apart from constantly sooty exhausts. Maybe they just poked a hole through the DPF!

Just wish I hadn't paid out £300+ for a new MAF sensor after being told by a 'specialist' this was the likely cause.

I've had my 335d for about 26 months and, apart from once just after I got it when the revs increased and the car smelt like "hot caramel" for a few mins, I've never noticed a regen. I checked the coolant temp today - 85 / 86 steady, up to 88 when heat soak after an, ahem, spirited half mile. Ambient temp was around 23/24C

The car runs great - I did about 160 miles y/day, mostly m/way at 75ish - averaging over 42mpg. Plus it's not short on oomph and I have very shiny exhaust tips.

I presume all is ok, given no symptoms of anything wrong. That said, can I tell when it last regen'd? Can I force one?

Drop in mpg is first sign - mine was a steady 40mpg then dropped relatively quickly to around 33. Then i checked coolant temp via hidden menu - struggled to get above 65 degrees on long motorway runs. Shot up to 55 then very gradually climbed. Should shoot up to around 75, pause then climb up to around 88. During regen can climb up to 100's, holds on to revs longer, jerky gear change and almost a misfire sensation - tends to give this sensation when travelling at around 30mph - never felt a regen on motorway at 70mph so possibly you wont either?
