I never learned how it works.
You also need the emergency key which opens the locks, you then snap that in to the plastic shell in the glovebox and drive away. My car is also missing the emergency key.

I pay $250 3 month ago....

Check with your insurance. Mine are replaced free if you just have the one as one is lost, with no increase/ claim on premium. I'm with Aviva.

I'd call the dealer, but most likely, they won't know either.

It's around 250 for a pre programmed key and manual piece. Shipped ready to use and already programmed. No other keys are effected unless you have more than three. This goes for non CA cars

I keep the little black plastic key in my wallet in case I lock myself out. I started doing this years ago after I locked my key fob in the car. I tried getting a locksmith to help but they said they couldn't open a BMW. I had to have my wife bring the second key fob -- a one hour drive.

The little black plastic key will open the door and it is small enough to fit inside my wallet's zipped pocket (with credit cards providing some stiffness, I've never had a problem keeping it intact). You then put it into the fob that is in the glove box to start the car.

I'm bringing up this old thread because I lost my second key fob and am researching my options. It seems very risky to use the glove box key fob as your only backup. Good to have the 3rd option.

Locks like I need to head off to the dealer now and hear the damage.

Automotive locksmith here, SOME locksmiths can actually program keys into our vehicles. All BMW's with transponders in the keys, use some model of EWS module. Some automotive locksmiths can pull the EWS, and use EEPROM to write new keys into the vehicle memory of keys.

But, to be honest, anything under $250 (Non-CA) is a reasonable price based on new fob cost on my end.

At my shop, for $30 I cut mechanical (Door only) keys all day long for people incase they get locked out!

Edit: E9X vehicles use CAS3+ in NA.

When I bought mine, after negotiating they handed me one key.
I told them "cars come with two keys, figure it out".
They provided the second key.

Most domestic cars (Ford, Chrysler, etc) require TWO working keys to enroll additional keys into the vehicle. So even if people think they're ok getting two keys, once you lose one, you have to fork over about 50-100 for programming!
