BMW Maintenance Warrantee Worth it? $2k

I have 4k more miles to figure out if dropping $2k on BMWs Maintenance warrantee is worth it or not. It covers EVERYTHING maintenance related. Breaks/Spark Plugs/Oil/ everything.

$2000 is a lot of money. Is it worth it? I have a 2009 328i sedan with 46k miles.

How much does it cost you guys a year for maintenance? Not repair maintenance, but regular maintenance?

I don't know how to do it myself, so I'll have to go to a 3rd party shop, do they charge a lot? My next maintenance is due in 8 months.

Thank you for your time.

Statistically, it won't be worth it.

Not worth the money. BMW calls all the shot's on the maintenance by mileage.

They charge 1800 for brakes. Well my local INDY. Friend just got a quote. Searched the parts online and less than 500.00 with OEM parts. So maybe another 200 for installation at most. Everything else is lifetime fluid according to bmw. You will have 2 oil changes done. 160.00 if you have no maintenance package.

700+160. They do sparkplugs at 100k so another 200.

Al in all you have 1200 in maintenance basically by doing this at an INDY. Microfilter 35 bucks. Air filter is like 40 bucks.

Its up to you but I do my oil changes every 5k.

Maintenance is not unexpected, it is a calculated cost. People buy warranties because it is insurance against repairs.
Independent mechanics are less $$.

I am also in the same boat , I do Have CPO , but 2k is bit too much.. would rather spend it on mods :P
I still have a month left for warranty upgrade. was wondering if i could just ask the dealer to change brake now ? not sure if they will agree.

The maint. plan is a rip. It's REALLY a rip on a normally aspirated BMW six.
I bought it on my 335 and didn't really understand the whole picture. in hindsight, I wasted $2K. I don't feel so bad because the deal I got on the car itself.

On a 335i, unless you can hit the 100K miles in the service period, you can never expect to recoup the money. Even then it will be hard.

Most expensive oil changes I have ever bought.

PaI don't know about maintenance but I would recommend getting extended warranty to 100k miles. I paid $2200 for my extended warranty and got $12,500 in dealership repairs and tire replacements. Just the evaporator repair alone paid the ext. warranty cost.. u might want to consider the maintenance plan because this way all the responsibility lies with the dealership. There won't be any blame games..

I did get the maintenance for my CPO. To get you an idea, so far I have gotten two microfilters, one oil change, one rear brake job, one set of wipers, and one brake fluid flush and refill. My plan is up on April 30th. I will get one more oil change and more more set of wipers out of it. I'm 18k miles away from spark plugs, and I'm 25k miles away from front brakes. I drive 60 miles a day for my commute, and I bet that I would get to 100k before the time limit was up (and thus get both sets of brakes replaced + spark plugs). If I did, then the plan would have paid off, but I'm only at 81k with a little more than a month to go. In retrospect, I would not have bought the plan if I had more experience with BMW (this is my first one). The CPO, on the other hand, totally worth it. Has paid for it's self multiple times.

Take it from someone that did get a maintenance warranty back in 2008....
  1. If you're 6MT, make sure your dealer covers the clutch. Some dealers wont, mine does. I'm on my 2nd right now. As my SA told me, any sign of slipping they will change your clutch to a new one which is nice.
  2. I had all 4 brakes changed
  3. I had all 4 rotors changed
  4. Peeling steering wheel trim covered, from what I was told from maintenance not CPO
  5. driver side door handle trim peeling, also covered.
  6. wiper blades changed every time I bring it in
  7. o2 sensor changed
  8. brand new spark plugs twice
  9. micro air filter changed everytime, although this is usually by request
  10. discolored side mirrors covered on both sides, from what I was told it came from maintenance not CPO for some reason

I mainly only got it for the clutch, but if you use it then yes it is definitely worth it. If you don't use it and forget about it, then no don't get it. Personally if anything is a bit off on the car I don't mind taking my car in Sat morning, getting a starbucks coffee, ride a loaner x3 (usually by request) for the weekend, and get a nice performing car on Monday morning.

Here is a list of all the items:

It's not worth it at 2k I don't think. I got mine hoping that I'd get front brakes out of it but only ended up with getting rears done. Or do like Ritz said and bake em and ice em! F the dealer, if you can get away with it, go for it.

Not worth it. Changing brakes, plugs and oil are very easy DIYs

I agree. If you have 2gs to spend extend the warranty.

Thanks guys. How much does the regular maintenance add up to each year for your cars?

I will be using my Tax Refund to make the purchase. Should I just keep the money in a savings account, for maintenance, or just buy the maintenance warrantee? These are the two things I'm deciding between. The last thing I want, is to get a surprise bill for a break change or something.

Let's face it, the maintenance plan is a profitable business as is the car. It would have been never offered if it would not be beneficial for BMW. They always call the shots. I have had two types of coverage so far -- from BMW and aftermarket -- for both, the shots are called by BMW.

My e92 coupe's window was kind of letting in some air sneak in at high speeds, creating this annoying whistle. Took it in -- was quoted 350 just to check the window out. I had coverage, so I agreed. They told me eventually that the window was not BMW OEM (my car was used) ... and that they needed to replace the window and go from there. And by the way, because someone "fiddled" with it -- NO COVERAGE. Sucked ~800 bucks from me... whistle never went away. Later got it fixed at a local shop for 120 bucks. It was the actuator's pad that was loose.

Recently my battery light and rear brake light went off. Took it in, they said they needed to replace the battery, change the bulb. Was quoted 1260 -- yes, 1260. Out of which only 630 was covered for many long and windy reasons. If I chose to put in a battery myself -- all electronics warranty will then fall in hot water.

Yes, you get peace of mind. But get badly ripped off. I would rather put that 2000 bucks in an emergency maintenance account that bears interest or something. Then use it if something major happens. I am 99% sure that you will have most of that 2K in your account at 100K miles if you take care of your car properly.

Hope this helps.

I drive about 90 miles a week, 360 miles a month, 4,300 miles a year. What are your thoughts judging from my mileage?

Thanks for sharing the story. That's CRAZY that they charged you that much for the battery and tail light. I think I'm leaning more towards the emergency maintenance savings right now. Also, I drive about 90 miles a week, 360 miles a month, 4,300 miles a year. What are your thoughts judging from my mileage?

It's a policy with no risk to BMW, not worth it. Maintenance is predictable.
Who needs to pay $160 for a microcabin filter?

Clutches shouldn't die that early...One can last up to 300k. I know this I used to have one at 270k before i sold my e36.
