what do you think about this lease?
hello everyone, i'm new to the board ( in the past i've only dreamed of sharing and posting questions with the amazing group of members here, the majority being very helpful). Anyways, I'm currently in the market for a new car, and this will be a lease.
Today i talked to a sales manager that has helped my family in the past with their car selection. so with that in mind, i received a quote* today from him with some incentives because of the lease program a family member is currently on. The vehicle inquiry design/msrp is.. 335is convenience pack premium pack prem sound pack 19'' 313 wheels DCT heated front seats navi bmw apps dest. charge ----all totaling to 69,525 the lease would include: 12k mi/yr for 36 months $5k down ( now considering no down since everyone is saying dont put money down on a lease ) for $610.21 + CALI TAX and he gave me a monthly price of $665.00 on ridewithg.c0m it stated 2013 BMW 335is Convertible 36 Month – Residual 62% of MSRP – .00127 Base Rate (dont really know how to do the calculations) do you think i could get the monthly payments lower than the offer? any comment would be high appreciated. Thank you for reading my post. - tmdals Last edited by tmdals0213; 07-04-2013 at 05:56 PM.. |

if you're putting 5k down, i'd rather buy the car than lease it. there's no point at all in putting lots of money down for a lease ($2k MAX in my opinion) other than to lower the monthly lease payment.... and if you're at a point where you can't afford that higher lease payment (because of no down), then the car is too expensive for you.

Remember if the car is totaled or stolen you are out 5 grand. Those assets are lost if the car goes. Something to keep in mind. |

I pay 680/month with 8k down, on the same car. I financed it and own it in 5 years.
Obviously will sell before that. Don't lease expensive cars and put alot down. You're out of your range. Go get a Honda Accord, put zero down, pay 300/month and be smart. Having a nicer car, won't get you laid, won't get you more friends (real ones anyways), won't change your life, etc. You'll thank me in 10 years when your buying your first house, instead of bunking with a roommate cause you were carbroke for 3 years leasing a BMW. |

Sorry, but almost $70K for an Is is too much - you're in M3 territory easily there. A friend of mine just leased an S4 premium+ pretty loaded up for around $600 a month almost nothing down and I'd argue it's a better car than the 335is (this coming from a 335i owner).
You can find a way better deal out there.

The smell of a brand new car is intoxicating, I agree but here some simple math.
Your lease: Down $5000 Payment $23,832 ($662 x 36 months) Total lost in 3 years $28,832 or $800/mo Buying a slightly used 2011 or 2012 IS should run you about $40k 3 years later, depending on the condition and miles, the value should be around $28 to $30k. Lets say $25,000 to be fair. Total lost in 3 years, $15,000 or $416/mo Use the extra cash from $13 grand you saved in mods which are inevitable. If money is not a problem at all, then look for a better deal. |

I have the exact same car on order except with coral red interior. If I remember correctly, 36 month/15k miles, $1.5k down, about $720/month out the door including tax. Yes, for $70,000 you are in the range of a lot of cars. As far as a lease goes, its not really M3 territory as it'd be close to $1000/month for a similar priced M3 on 36 month/15k. Financing is another story. I also drove an Audi S4 and S5, nice looking cars but they had no excitement behind the wheel. Being a convertible guy, the 335is is one of the most fun cars this company has ever made, with the ridiculous amount of torque available. Good luck buddy!

Running those numbers, you are getting a decent deal on the car, something like a $4000 off MSRP discount. I think better deals are out there for 335is convertibles but if you are talking about ordering a car to your spec, this is a fair deal. You can probably get one cheaper if you take dealer stock. FWIW, that money factor you quoted equates to a 3% interest rate, not bad for a BMW lease.
All that said, almost $800 per month is a whole lotta dough for a 3 series. |

wow, thank you everyone for your honest and very informative input.
i am aware that for the listed msrp, i am able to drive a stock m3 and many other high end cars from audi and mb. however, waiting for the car for 2 years now, im too interested and focused on the 335is model i just cant back away. (sadly but not sadly only the vert is available) i initially asked my sales rep for a coupe that was slightly driven, a demo car or even a used one to get the payment lower, but up until now we weren't successful. as of now my dealership will be receiving two verts and two more available for order. so i just chose one of the two thats on the way. thank you everyone once again, im very grateful for the inputs!!! p.s just want to make it clear that the car will be a convertible not a coupe, therefore the higher msrp. id be unreasonable if i paid that for a coupe ill only be leasing..

and also, if you guys had the choice, most of you guys will do little to no down and try to bring down the invoice to lower the monthly pay, correct? thanks for reading!!

I'm interested too. What happens to your "equity" in a lease if its totaled or stolen? I've never leased before.

Any money you put down on a lease is like a sunk cost. It reduces your monthly payments, but say you have a 3 year lease and after 6 months your car is totaled. You were only able to receive reduced payments for 1/6 of the life of the lease, so only 1/6of the money you put down essentially went back to you. When your car is stolen/totaled, insurance pays off the leasing company for the value of the car, and your contract is done. So thus, any money you put as a down payment is gone forever.

With interest rates as low as they are it makes very little sense to put any more money down than you have to (assuming you can exercise self-control).

Well, I talked to a bmw rep and he said they lease f30 335i for around 500. But in your case you are getting an e92 335is. Some people are mentioning just buying the car, you don't want to buy the car because why not just buy a used m3 for around the same price? And personally I think a lease is stupid because you are basically renting a car and all the money you pay is not going into the car. If you buy a car, you can always sell it and make money back, but a lease is just constant payments towards nothing but a rental car with limitations.
Want to buy it? Get an m3 Or just don't lease anything IMO |

Don't forget the new 4-series is coming out shortly - do you want an "old" model that quickly -- if you don't mind that, I would think they would be dealing on '13's to get rid of them....
