Smog Tech system unable to communicate
Good afternoon ....need some input or guidance for this issue im currently having....
so my cars registration is up for renewal needing to be checked at a smog star certified location which is the place I've been going to for many years....the issue in question is that their machine isn't able to establish connection or communicate when plugged into obd port....but I'm able to communicate with the bt adapter in protools and verified obd readiness is ready on specified systems for the smog inspection but it won't with their machine....I checked obd port/wiring and all is good...has anyone had similar issue ? |

I have seen some e90s that won’t communicate with certain scanners/programs through the OBD port. Mainly where protools won’t show OBD monitors, but a generic scanner will.
It could be that the smog shop updated their systems and your e90 is just one of those random ones that won’t communicate. If you can communicate with protools, try a different scanner with a cable to verify and go hook up at a different smog shop. |

yeah it's totally bizarre because I've gone there in the past and no issues but then I'm just now remembering that since the last time I've gone I have upgraded the jbbf module because I did the oem reverse backup cam retrofit but I doubt that'd be the root of the issue....

UPDATE
I found out what it was....so originally from the start obd port had only one line for comms vs the common hi and low and my car was equipped with jbbf87 K-line (jbe II) (cars older than march 2007) which my car build date was 3/07 and even then at that time protools was still able to communicate as well as other scanners only with protools I noticed that not all the modules would pop up unless i refresh the ecu scan...but anyways I then proceeded to do the backup camera retrofit which then in order for camera module to be recognized my current jbe needed to be replaced or upgraded which I did to jbe3 which anything after 03/07 is dcan and while in the process of install I noticed that pin 17 and 33 on jbe was low and high dcan outputs to obd 14 and 6 and wat I had was only the low side wire going out to obd to pin 7..so I added the line to have low and hi and moved wire from pin 7 on obd ro pin 14 which is low side and all worked and all my modules would pop up without having to rescan so I thought all was good....until the day to get smogged....long story short I put everything back to her it was before and was able to complete smog....now to figure out why unable to communicate if wiring and all was not an issue maybe a coding issue because I've asked those who've done this retrofit and they didn't encounter the issue I had... |
