"Going to Lemon my car. update post #27
Well first things first, my car, 08' 335i coupe, Completely Stock, bought CPO'd @ 32k, right now i am at 39k. Now the problems that were changed through warranty since my ownership of 7k miles : - 1x changed 6x injectors - 1x changed 6x spark plugs - 1x turbocharger - 1x hpfp - 1x turbocharger vacuum reservor tank - 1x audio output, radio / ccc permanent failure - 1x radiator compensating tank leaking - 3x hpfp failure - 3x brake light bulb failure - 1x rear brake pad wear sensor - 3x parking lamp bulb failure - 1x tail light bulb socket incorrect connection - 1x starter - 1x decarbonized my valves So with all these failures from previous owner, and myself, only owning 7k miles currently.. i think i am done and going to contact bmw NA and to pursue them to buy it back." |

3 outcomes 1. Freakishly lucky and have zero problems (lotto territory) 2. Mild problems maybe a few k 3. BIG problems 5 figures. KNOW WHAT YOU ARE GETTING INTO the N54 is amazing! Quote:

Here is few things to think about... Most 335i's are rather doing fine. Ones that have any problems will let it be known, and nothing wrong with that. but perspective can be skewed towards problem side because of it. I say mostly, a well taken cared of 335i that hasnt been driven the crap out of, and was used for daily purposes, will be a pretty reliable car. I bought mine CPO 07 few years back. Zero issues. Did i get a particularly lucky car? i dont think so... the owner had it for a lease, who was a older couple that drove it normal, and so did i. How was it driven? that's the number one question. 335i can be reliable and mostly it is. but you wont hear from them. Find out as much info as you can on that car... |

Id say the only way to own that car is to have at least a basic aftermarket warranty that will cover all the major stuff that will cost you 2k+
It shouldn't cost you more than 2500 for a warranty from USAA |

You read the horror stories, yes, but no one posts that their car is running well. Take care of it and dont beat the sh*t out of it and you should be fine.

I'd like to know what he means by don't run it hard. You can be responsible and run it hard. Oil coolers, FMIC, letting it get 2 temp before going WOT, preventative maintenance, good fluid change intervals.
Throwing an ECU mod on and gunning it all around town is something I'd call abusive and any car when abused will give issues. |

I bought an 08 335i w/31k miles a few weeks ago. Had it over to a top indy shop for a lookover.
Had 30k services done; new plugs; update software. He looked at some of the usual trouble spots (oil filter housing leak; tranny sleeve leak; carbon on intake valves; etc.). His response: "This baby's like brand-new!" For another $8-12k, I coulda bought an '09/'10 CPO car with more miles and only two years warranty. I decided to keep the extra money and live with repair risk. IMO -- the purpose of insurance (ie, extended warranties) is to cover losses that you cannot afford to bear. Everybody is different, but I can afford to fix my cars. Over the course of a dozen different cars, I've only had one car where the cost of an extended warranty would have paid for itself. Meanwhile, I didn't spend that $20-$25k for warranties, and paid cash to fix cars. And, BTW, trade-in value of a car more than about 5 years old isn't dependent on lurking mechanical problems. Dealer does a quick cosmetic lookover and drives it around the block (maybe). The car is going to auction anyway, and auction buyers don't get to drive it and do a thorough inspection. So, if your 335i runs but is looking at big repairs, go trade it in. It's more important to keep it pretty than to keep it in perfect mechanical shape. I once got full trade-in value on a Volvo that need a transmission and a new heat exchanger...prolly $5k of work. |

DON'T DO IT! Don't buy 07 model. They are 10X more likely to have issues.
Stick with 09 or above. It is fairly reliable. If you don't you will deal with subframe issues, turbos, lack of extra cooling radiator, and a host of other problems. A lot of parts have been revised 3-5 times by the time they hit 2009/2010. You've been warned. |
