2008 Do It Yourself Program Overview
The 2008 Do It Yourself (DIY) program allows NCC Members to work on their own automobiles under the supervision of expert mechanics and technicians provided by the sponsor. The DIY purpose is to learn and practice proper maintenance and repair techniques that you can complete within a two-and-one-half-hour time period. There are usually several NCC members who can assist when an extra pair of hands or advice is needed, and we are happy to show newcomers the joys of working on your own car. DIY participants are encouraged to contact the club DIY Coordinator before the event to help you plan ahead and decide what size job you can tackle, based on your skill level and tools. Most DIYs start at 8 or 9 AM, and finish at 2 or 3 PM. Lunch for accepted applicants and sponsor staff will be provided free by the Club.

Applications
Applications will open three weeks before each DIY, and will close one week before each DIY, unless closed earlier by the DIY coordinator because that DIY is full. As long as the website says that Applications are open, you may apply and you will receive an automatic message of receipt. Act quickly; we have had several DIYs fill up in a matter of days.

An Application requires a member to complete and submit the Application Form via our website. After you submit the form, you will receive an electronic confirmation. Also, an electronic copy of your full details will be available to the NCC DIY Committee and the individual Coordinator of the DIY. To encourage equal participation, for each 2008 DIY the first three ladies to apply and participate will receive a special souvenir.

Acceptance
Depending on the response and the size of the sponsor’s facilities, we may have to limit attendance. Acceptance will be determined by date & time of Application, and by intended DIY projects. No later than the Wednesday before the DIY, and usually much sooner, the applicable NCC Coordinator will send an e-mail message to each person who had Applied, explaining who has been Accepted (there may be a capacity problem), as well as additional information about the DIY.

Payment
When the NCC Coordinator sends out the Acceptance e-mails, he or she will include a link to PayPal. At that time we ask you to utilize PayPal to pay the non-refundable $15 Acceptance fee, since it makes it so much easier on the organizers. Please remember that any $15 fees not received before the DIY will change to $25 fees on the day of the event.
Notes:
(1) NCC members must remember that the prime reason for these DIYs is to learn from expert mechanics the proper and safe maintenance practices for working on our cars. All other member benefits are secondary for planning purposes.
(2) All parts, oils, etc installed at the DIY will be sourced from the sponsor; any exceptions must be requested via the Application form by the car owner, and explicitly agreed by the sponsor, the DIY coordinator, and the member before the DIY.
(3) Members should direct all questions or comments to the specific DIY Coordinator (“Lady X”, Tony, Phillip, Jude, Zach, or Alan); please do not ask the sponsor unless you get explicit guidance from the DIY coordinator.
(4) The 2008 DIY program will continue its support of the NCC DIY policy of returning members’ investments via a variety of received value.
(5) We will distribute certain 2008 DIY Regalia gratis to accepted applicants. To support our reduced budget, we will sell other DIY Regalia to accepted applicants at substantial discount.

Tools
Recently a sponsor complained that a member borrowed many tools from a mechanic. All Club members are expected to bring their own tools, such as metric wrenches, socket sets, etc, or to borrow another Club member’s tools. Club members must understand that all on-site tools and tool storage are the private property of the garage mechanics, and we must not borrow those tools without special permission; nor may we damage the tool cabinets. The service shop hosting the DIY event may be able to access and use some specialty tools. However, DIY participants should not assume that any tool is available; please plan ahead. Although NCC has a Special Tool program, we cannot guarantee a specific tool will be available. Ask the NCC Coordinator well before the DIY!

Parts
Each participant is reminded to buy all parts (including oils & other fluids) from the event host if they sell parts. Most service shops offer discounts to Club members, and buying parts from the event host helps provide incentive to host an event. If you want to bring your own parts, you must inform the NCC Coordinator well before the DIY and receive written approval. The coordinator will respond to you in a timely manner.
Marques (pronounced “Marks”, and meaning “manufacturers”)
NCC BMW CCA is a marque club, celebrating the BMW and MINI marques, and these DIYs are designed to keep our BMWs & MINIs running safely and well. However, on occasion a member may wish to bring a different marque (e.g. Morgan or Porsche) to a DIY. The member should Apply, noting the request to bring the specific marque, year, and model; the DIY Coordinator will liaise with the sponsor for permission, and will respond to the member with Acceptance or otherwise.

Scheduling
Participants’ times are assigned by date & time of Application. Participants must arrive before the start of the event, or risk losing their “place in line”. However, the DIY Coordinator has the authority to rearrange the schedule for exigencies. Please be prepared to help other members while awaiting a lift. On the day of the DIY, only if space and time are available, and only with both the Coordinator’s and Sponsor’s approval, members who have not Applied (“Walk-ups”) may be admitted upon payment of the $25 “Walk-Up” fee.

Contact
If you would like to help organize a DIY, or have a facility who can host an event, please contact DIY Coordinator Alan Marsh at abm_16@verizon.net
