335d power loss - ongoing case

Seems my D that' in the dealers today isn't covered by warranty.

Symptoms being, loss of power and no turbo boost, intermittent. Cured by turning car off then on.

Sounded like pressure convertors initially. Also oil leak re-appeared on small turbo pipe.

They are claiming 8 hoses (vacuum hoses and oil feed hose and hoses going to pressure convertor) need replacing at around £600 - Not covered under warranty as isn't mechanical or electrical.

Going on the warranty policy i understand this, but 8 hoses? Seems like a bit of a problem them. Plus, the car has only done 40k miles.

What do you think?

I've certainly had a surprise today.

I had a similar issue on saturday .... car was working fine one mine, parked up for 20 mins, no boost from the little turbo ..... the big blower still worked, but nothing from the smaller one

So, whipped off the engine cover, and air box, replaced all the vacuum hoses - reassembled, jobs a good un .... been fine since

The was a couple of fiddly ones to put back on, but nothing too bad

The hardest one was the actuator that diverts the exhaust gasses ftp and from the smaller turbo

Personally, i'd DIY

Cheers for the advice

I'm not sure i've got the skill to do it in case i f- it up. I wouldn't know what to do.

Also do you think it could cause an intermittent fault? Only looses boost occasionally.

I think i probably owe BMW a diagnosis charge too.

Some of my vac pipes had gone hard, cracked and needed to be replaced - my boost loss wasn't intermittent

TBH, £600 seems a little steep to me - but what do i know
It cost me £10 for a few meters of vac pipe, and took me about an hour all told

That's what worries me, i would have thought it would be an issue all the time.

The pipes braiding is fraying off but i can't visually detect any splits.

I couldn't see any splits on mine, but they'd gone hard and brittle
The braiding had started to perish and fell off once being gently handled

It'd perhaps be worth your while nipping your car to a local trusted mechanic/competent techie friend and getting the vac pipes replaced first, then seeing how it goes - if the problem returns then look into it further

The only think i can think of is the actuator for the exhaust gas crossover from big to little turbo may be faulty
Either the diaphragm inside is starting to split or there are a build up of carbon deposits on the penny valve ?!

Has anyone successfully claimed for hoses on warranty or got a goodwill on this stuff

£600 is a lot for 8 hoses

I must say i'm getting very frustrated with this

As it stands they don't seem like they want to budge on their original diagnostic of 8 hose failures and still want to charge me £600 odd that the warranty won't cover.

afaik they won't be replacing the pressure convertor valve which judging by my symptoms matches up with everyone else who has experienced loss of power over around 2k RPM.

Last thing i want to do is pay out £600 not to solve the problem. And £600 for some hose is f-in ridiculous

If hoses were not on properly the problem would always be there. It wouldn't be intermittent.

I know mate, they are giving me the run around. If the hose/s was f-ed it would have no boost at any point.

The intermittent boost issue is classic for a pressure convertor / actuator problem. Even if the hoses need to be replaced.

But of course they are the knowledgable ones. And i have a sneaky suspicion they are trying to pass off valves as hoses to side step a warranty claim. 8 hoses, i dont think so.

i reported a problem with having no power from 1k to 3k then the boost eventually kicks in.

Took it too a BMW specialist who i have used in the past. They come back and said it was my hoses as they was leaking, i didnt want to fork out the money it was gonna cost as i didnt wanna replace something not to solve the problem as ive been reading alot about the pressure valves in actuators etc.

Cut a long story short, the problem was the hoses and they replaced all of them for me. The cost was around £250. Car runs perfect now.

Quick update

The dealer has done a u-turn on it all and will now cover it under warranty.

Oil Leak on small turbo feed pipe (worrying)

Both actuators / pressure convertor valves and hoses as they are leaking

Should be sorted next week.

What do people make of the oil leak on small turbo supply pipe? It's dripping only a very very tiny amount of oil but could this have done any damage already? It sounds like any other turbo car, very faint boost noise but no whistling so should be ok right?

A warning to owners to check i reckon, acerboo mentioned this and you would never know you had a leak because it's hidden under the engine cover. Not fun if your turbo gives way at 60k.

I've had my small oil feed pipe replaced, it'd frayed and was weeping slightly (oily smell)
Seem to be effacing a few cars

If my lack of boost comes back then i'll have to replace the actuators and the pressure converter valves too :\
Mines not a warrantied car any longer though :\

A small mist leak from the oil feed hose will not have caused any damage to the unit. Relax.

Assuming you haven't got any sort of warranty, I would be pushing for a good will payment of some sort.

ive had the oil leak on the small turbo pipe diy fixed that and i noticed the vac pipes were also frayed not surprising as they get cooked sitting on top of the turbo the heat generated is unbelievable not really acceptable to have these probs on a car costing £40000 what else do you buy thats any better?

Mine came back from the dealers last week, all vac pipes renewed, small turbo oil feed pipe done and pressure convertors fixed.

Drives as good as new now.

Would be surprised if the large turbo has gone. What are the symptoms? Noises etc....

thanks

thanks for the tip, thnakfully as a matter of course the local specialist reflashed the ECU and everything seems OK. i am still nervous though lets hope it was just electrical gremlins rather than mechanical at this stage!

diagnostic said turbo failure, well looks like that was clearly wrong!!

Hi, yes, I just replaced the vacuum hoses....it's just awkward and fiddly but easily do-able
All I removed was the air box and MAF, engine cover, that's it....

I used some pinch nose pliers and standard looking vacuum hosing from a pneumatic's company

It's just alittle time consuming and you need to be patient
If I were to do it again I would remove the inlet manifold too
