The former....

1) Fill bucket from tap and douse car with sponge / normal water
2) few capfuls of cleaner in bucket and clean car/rims with suds
3) Fill with water from tap again and chuck over the car to get suds off
4) repeat #3

4 buckets of water from a tap. Probably more like 3 and a half as I don't fill them totally.

Hi all. This is my first post though I been an avid reader of this excellent forum for some months now.

I thought I had better put my 2 cents in as far as car washing is concerned. I am one of the owners of a car wash chain in Sydney and hence can offer the “inside” picture regarding car washing myths and facts.

Star Wash is not a franchise and uses brushes in all their wash bays apart from their 3 smaller sites.

Alto Pennant Hill also use brushes in their bay as well. Alto’s system was supplied by Car Kleen in Sydney and is a high-tech German machine.

Laser Wash and the like will certainly not scratch your car. They use a mix of alkalines and acids to loosen dirt particles. However, if you have anything more than dust on your car, this technology will struggle to clean.

Machine brushes will not scratch your car if the brushes and technology are the right type. Only choose a machine car wash if it uses light foam brushes with an appropriate rinse cycle. That way only totally clean lubricated foam will ever comes in contact with the car. This foam is far cleaner than you can ever get with a bucket and sponge after extended use.

The absolute no-no is to go to a car wash that uses sponges or mitts to wash the entire car. The problem is not with the actual sponge or mitt but the dirt contamination present. If you saw the water that Hand Washes rinse their sponges in, you would be sick. Even though the sponge may appear clean, it will contain a fine powder of grit that will leave that fine webbing look on your car. Especially darker colours on a hot day when the paint surface is softer. Believe me, I see a thousand cars a week from all sources of car cleaning methods.

My tips:
  • Wash your car weekly – either by a high-tech brush machine, yourself at home or a DIY bay using your own sponge.
  • Make sure the paint surface is cool to touch when washing.
  • Ensure your water and sponge is always clean.
  • Try to avoid “swirl removers” if you can. Go for a finishing polish and spend the extra time and effort to make the surface look like a mirror. A low-speed orbital buffing machine makes the job much easier with better results.
  • Avoid using mag wheel cleaners. Even though they may be safe on your wheels, they will often cause your brakes and hubs to discolour and rust prematurely.
  • If your car is new….Polish, Polish, Polish!

I am an absolute nut when it comes to getting cars clean. It drives my wife mad but the results make it worthwhile.

Hope this helps.

Cheers.

I prefer cold water as it helps cool the paint surface and is slower drying (so you don't get as many dried water spots). The removal process of most contaminants does not benefit from warm water. However, on a cold winter's day, slightly warm water is easier on the hands.

Oh.... and don't forget to rinse as much dust/dirt from the paint surface as possible before using a mitt/sponge.

Cheers.

That's not conclusive evidence in my books. Keep trying.
