Costco

I'm looking to purchase new tires and have pretty much decided on Michelin Pilot Super Sports and would like to purchase them at Costco. Has anyone on here had their runflats removed by Costco? If so, which location?

I've never gone to Costco for tires, but my parents went and one of their guys stole their wheel lock. So we've never went back for tires. This was the one in Fairfax.

I love everything about Costco but I would avoid their tire place. Heard way too much horror stories about them.

my brother buys his tires there for his truck because they have great warranty/road packages and their prices are pretty good, but I'm not sure I would trust them to mount the tires on BMW wheels without scratching them.

I recommend Discount Tire. They usually have very good pricing to start with, and will do price matching (like to like, so shipping gets figured in if you are looking at Tire Rack pricing) with any competitor. Wheels and tires are all that they do, so they are good at it and take pride in the quality of their service (at least the stores around me do).

DUnlop Z1 Star Specs.

More grip, and less wear, and better sidewall than Michelin and Bridgestone.

This is exactly my concern. I've used Costco numerous times for tires and have always had good experiences, however removing the existing runflats and damage to my rims are serious concerns of mine.

i am sure Curry's auto in Reston can price match it and offer warranty as well.
That's where I take my car. :-)

LOL less wear? You have to be kidding.

In fact, the recent autocross tests that tire rack conducted on a few e92 328i, the super sports placed slightly above the star specs for dry and well above them for wet grip. I have three friends with them and while I believe with you that the at-the-limit dry grip may be a slightly better with the dunlops, the PSS are a far more livable tire, almost no compromise. The highway noise from the dunlops is no joke and while I fully planned on getting those tires for my next set (on a set of 17" wheels) I have changed my mind due to the noise and wear that my buddies (MS3, GD STi, 944) are experiencing on much lighter cars. My friends with the dunlops are college students who have sub-5 mile commutes, and even with few miles (less than 5k each)/less than one season on them they are all already approaching the last wear indicators.

I have driven 22k miles on my PSS (two very aggressive, 15.6mpg averaging summers, 10 autocross events, and three track school days) and while they are about toast now, I certainly got my money's worth. As someone who has long term experience with both tires, I simply cannot recommend the dunlops for a daily tire (until their proposed next-gen extreme performance summer comes out next year). The michelins are totally daily-drivable, and even my buddy who hates on michelins tried them out on his e39M and loves them (and I value his opinion given that he regularly races a 996 cup). They are extremely quiet and made a huge difference on our Boxster S as well, even compared to the very good PS2s they replace.

I used to like Curry's until they sold me a complete front end rebuild for my pickup truck swearing up and down that it would cure this annoying noise and I thought it needed a new spindle or spindles. $1200 later and it's still making the @#$$% noise... well it was when I sold it. I assume it still is.

Mike Fallon in Sterling may or may not sell tires (I assume he does) but he drives a 5er and has mounted tires for me before without making any marks on my 17s at all. I have yet to have to have anyone mess with my 19s but I'll let him try them before anyone else. I've seen his tire machine and it's the kind that grips the wheel from the inside of the barrel with soft pads (well, they're probably nylon or delrin or something.) If nothing else you could buy from TR and ship to Fallon's.

Anyone know a place where I can go to mount/balance my four 19" tires on 19" rims? I am not looking to spend more than $15 per tire. I know there are couple of good tire shops on this forum but they charge 20+ per tire.

yes, i am not sure if you will find any place that will do at 15$ a pop.
I have paid 50$ or more for road force balance and it's crazy how expensive it is. 200-250$ for mounting and balancing. Almost makes me wanna go in buzine$$ on installation.

I don't know if you'll find a shop that mounts and balances low profiles for $15 each. 45 series and up you can, but not 40 series and below.

Really? If I purchase the tires from them, they will do it for 15/tire ..but if I bring my tires they will charge 25/tire.

I work as a supervisor at the Costco tire center. $15 installation but only if you buy your tires at Costco. The $15 includes rotation and balance for the life of the tires. Nitrogen inflation and a 5 year road hazard warranty.

Costco is hit or miss by location & installer. Gaithersburg is all miss. I got tired of dealing with "miss" with my last car & will never return. They always made it right, but the hassles were unbelievable. They scratched 4 brand new wheels all the way around (paid to have them refinished), stripped my locking lug key (paid to replace), scratched 3 out of four wheels around the lugs (paid for refinish), and lost my valve stem caps (paid to replace) over the course of three visits. I have no idea how they justify even keeping it in business with those kinds of results.

Getting tires mounted on the beater with steel wheels? Sure.
Getting tires mounted on decent wheels? Nope.
Getting RFTs mounted (or unmounted) on decent wheels? He// no.

Go to tire rack and look for a recommended installer to see what pricing looks like in your area.

I completely agree with you. They will make it right regardless of which location you go to. It's also a hit or miss some places have shitty installers that are careless when working. I make sure I'm the one working on the higher end cars when they come through my shop or I'll make sure the experienced guys are working on them. You just have to emphasize that you want an experienced installer working on it.

Depends on where you live. Tire Rack, believe it or not, uses Sears at Dulles Town Center as an installer. I recently used them for my wheels, mounting and balancing Michelin PSS on my 219M wheels:

Also used VA Tire in Ashburn. Again, depends upon where you live or willing to go.

Good luck!

Probably one of the best places I would say if you go to get tires mounted and balanced would be Mach V with their state of the art machine. I've never had any problems at Sears before either like Flip stated.
