I took delivery of an alpine white E91 on Monday...I love everything about it
so far! I've always had a thing for euro sport-wagons (smaller, sporty, economical, practical) so it was only a matter of time before a 3 Touring would become my family hauler, grocery-getter and snowboard rig. I have a toy specifically for early Saturday morning twisties so the NA 3L mated to an auto will be just fine for day to day stuff!! (I won't lie though, I'd buy a 335 or 335D Touring in a flash if they were available!) Wagons are dead sexy. |

XC70
My spouse, who owned a 1986 BWM 335e sedan (MT, all the options) and loved it, bought a 2006 Volvo XC70 when it was time for a new vehicle. She looked at BMW E91 as well as the Volvo XC90 and the styling and driving feel of the AWD XC70 won over the others. The XC70 is a great-looking car, has decent cargo capacity, and is comfortable about town or on long road trips. I am not sure why there is an aversion to "station wagons" in the USA.

Why I purchased an E91...
Hi all,
I've been targeting to purchase a lightly used X3 with manual transmission. Since you can't purchase BMW SAV's X1, X3, or X5 new without an automatic these days and other manufactures of SUV's for the last ten years have not made available a manual transmission option or if they do, it is the base vehicle without four or all wheel drive. Ok, I admit it, I'm a dinosaur who loves the art of driving a manual. I know I'm a dying breed here in the US, but... I love deciding if I want to drive the vehicle spirited, hyper mile it, drive it as smoothly as possible... it's all a game to me and it gives me something to think about and do while in the drivers seat, which is not the same as pushing a button on the dash... Anyway, I came across a 2009, 6-spd manual, 328i sport wagon at our local BMW dealership with 8,500 miles on it. It never occurred to me to shop for a station wagon... Grew up with a 1966 Chevy Chevelle, blue, three on the tree and distinctly understand the usefulness of this body style. However, SUV's seemed to have taken over my conscience, just like the rest of the US population. It is not surprising, SUVs are popular... I wanted one back in the early days of the Ford Bronco II, Jeep Cherokee and Chevy S10 Blazer. Back then the SUV was for outdoor types, who wanted or needed 4x4 capabilities. The minivan was for families that didn't want a station wagon. So I guess in the US, the station wagon has been in decline since the '80s. Today the SUV has morphed into a lifted station wagon with masculine, go anywhere styling. It has become the all/front wheel drive grocery getter, people mover, all around vehicle. People like them for their higher viewing position, perceived safety, higher ground clearance, ease of getting in and out, large object mover capabilities and coolness factor. Station wagons on the other hand... although super practical in comparison to its coupe or sedan siblings, just can't shake the stigma of the '60s, '70's and '80's of the dorky vehicle that mom picked you up from school or my first hand me down car. It just felt wrong when you rolled up in your mom's station wagon and your friends were sporting a Camaro... Today, I'm fine with the station wagon, kind of like the look... I must have grown up, I'm my father of the past with a performance oriented station wagon... Perhaps in the future, it will become geeky cool. Just like people wearing thick rimmed glasses today... But until then, I will enjoy my extremely rare, manual transmission, performance sport-wagon with a huge grin on my face with the knowledge that my vehicle has similar driving characteristics but increased utility as its product line siblings and I will most certainly not see a similar vehicle in the parking lot or waiting at a traffic light. How cool is that to not roll up to a similar car as the one you are driving... if you do, do you wave, nod, or just look the other way? With much aloha, |
