car leaking oil?

Hey guys,

I have a 2007 335i with 41k miles and tonight I decided to start it up and move it because I've had it garaged for the winter and today was a warm one...anyways when I moved it I found an oil spot under where it was sitting about the size of a softball. Any idea what this could be? I had the oil changed by the dealer about a month before I put it away for the winter...

Did my dealer mess up an oil change? could I have a broken seal?

Usually its just the oil filter housing gasket that goes bad. Get that changed, clean up the underside of the motor and see if there are any more leaks.

Thanks for the advice, I'm going to look today and find where my leak is. If this is the problem how much do you think it would cost?

It's not a simple work to be honest. I changed mine myself some time ago and it was a PITA. You have to remove intake manifold to get to one of the bolts that holds the housing.

Don't look at the DIY that is in DIY section since it shows either earlier model or N52 engine which has more narrow manifold edges so they can just loosen manifold but still keep it in place while have access to the bolt.
That's not the case with 335i.

For experienced mechanic who already have done that before I'd say it's at least 4 hours job if everything goes smoothly.

Yikes, looks like this is going to cost me. What do you think the odds of me getting BMW to cover this under my original warranty is? it just ended November 26th I haven't even driven the car since.

Give it a shot... I heard sometimes they honor a warranty if you was a loyal customer and if it's not a lot of miles after last record they have.

P.S. Inspect it first carefully. I had a lot of leaks in my car LOL
filter housing
valve cover gasket was leaking
oil pan gasket was leaking
and the best part I lost somewhere the bracket or something that holds the exhaust pipe, so I had oil drips on my cats and saw smoke coming from the engine. That was scary So inspect it first. oil filter housing leak usually appear here and easily noticeable without need to remove anything: http://www.almering.com/picture/gasket/5.oilgasket.JPG

so today I jacked up the car and found that the transmission is what is leaking. I took a few cell phone pictures. This is the back part of the transmission right? You can see in the pictures that its wet and oil collecting about to drip from bolts. What is going on?

Wow... I wouldn't drive it in this condition...

You need to replace tranny pan and sealing sleeve at least.

I was afraid you were going to say that... I guess I'm going to take it to the dealer and see if I can get them to fix this under warranty. I'm not paying thousands for a car i bought less then a year ago not to mention my warranty ended 2 months ago.

Yeah, try that. Have you done any inspections at your dealer before warranty expired?

No, I never had them do that before it expired. The last time I brought it in was just for an oil change at the end of October. 1 month before the warranty was up.

I just gave the dealer a call. I told them my problem and about my issue with the warranty and not even having the car for a year. They told me to bring it in so they can take a look at it before we make any decisions financially.
