Floor Mats

Wee, got floor mats.

Now how the hell do you install them?

When I got my car, they told me they run out and would tell me when they would be receiving some. They finally got some and sent me my way. I was OK with that since I figured floor mats wouldn't need rocket science to install, but they are trickier then I thought.

Do I have to poke holes through the original carpet for the anchors? Where are these holes? I don't see them at all!

The way I figured it was that holes were pre made for the mat anchors to screw right in. Am I thinking wrong?

Hope you get an answer because I am in the same boat, only haven't gotten the mats yet, dealer was out when I took delivery!

Yes, basically you have to 'ruin' the carpets by drilling a great hole through them with the screws supplied with the mats. I couldn't face doing this, however, and have left the mats unattached - they stay in place fine.

DOH!! I wont be doing that. I guess BMW assumed that not everyone would have mats. Even my Maxima has a mechanism by which the mat has the hole, and the car has a plastic male fitting coming out of the floorboard. Love that 1998 Japanese thinking!

My e90 came with velcro backing discs already installed in the floor, so both my summer mats and winter mats simply velcro to those two discs. Must have been done at the factory or the dealership, but wherever it was done, there was no extra cost.

I'm sure the dealer would do it for free?

+1 no need to drill the mat will stay in place. They are very sticky.

the winter rubber mats are heavy and will stay on their weight. THe carpet ones I have anchored

Drill is definetely the wrong word to use here.

The summer carpet mats have a velcro disc that holds it to the floor. The winter rubber mats have a disc with a hook that holds the mat in place. This issue is that mats are not designed (at least on my drivers side) with disc placement being the same.

On the passenger side, I used the same holes for both mats. On the driver's side I had to make two new holes for the winter mat.

It's basically applying enough force to screw the new disc through the carpet. If the plastic tip isn't sharp enough to pierce the carpet, just use a razor blade to poke a small hole.

Yes. You simply apply pressure and turn the screw anchor so it pierces the carpet. This is not a big deal.

I agree--not that hard. The instructions said to get a "sharp" object of some kind to poke a hole in the mat, but I found that applying a decent amount of pressure to the disc was enough to get through the carpet. No drilling required.

we got the rubber floor mats from bmw and they had the velcro on the back to attach to the floor it works very nicely.

i'm thinking about getting the rubber mats for winter--how much were they? And do they actually come in different colors, or is it just grey--grey is the only color i have ever seen on these.

I think there's two different rubber mats. There's the traditional deep grooved rubber mats, then there's the ones that are rubber with a carpeted heel pad.

We paid about 130 canadian for them but im sure u could find them on the internet for cheaper. they are the thin ones with the little carpeted heel pad on them. yes they do come in other colors other than grey because the ones we have are black and im assuming there are biege ones aswell.

The front rubber mats each have two circles that you poke the screw-in hooks through (helps to pre-pierce this as it's about a mm thick). If you have the velcroed carpetted mats, the exchange of velcro retainers with the hook retainers takes about 2 mins. It is a good idea to restrain the rubber mats because they could drift on the carpet and get stuck under your foot while driving. They are heavy and tend to stay in place but why would the retainers be included if their grip was sufficient?

I didn't realize there was more than one kind--I had only seend the traditional ones--do you have the second kind that you refer to? I would be curious to see them....

Okay, I have the carpeted mats and they've been driving me INSANE! I just thought they stay in their place, but my feet tend to move them all around, sometimes they'll go up and get caught in the clutch when it's depressed

Are these the types with the screws? I'm utterly confused.

Yes, the OEM carpeted mats have screws. My car is a MT as well, but I have not had many problems with them moving around or my foot getting caught when the clutch is depressed. Seems like this would only be a problem if the mats were not stationary--but I have even seen on other threads that some people don't even bother with the screws b/c the mats seems to stay in place well for them. I guess you could try removing the screws from their present location and trying a different spot? Maybe this would help.
