E92 Main Beam
I don't know about other owners, but I find the main beam on my car a bit on the weak side, I think it's due to the fact that it is just the single Xenon burner per side, and when you flick to main beam, only the mirror moves and there's no fill in light from the halogen bulb.

That is the same with all Bi-xenons, where the xenon mirror flicks up to become high beam... I have found the Xenons on the BMW are rubbish compared to the non-bi xenons on my last car (Mazda 6 MPS).

I had Bi xenon's on my previous Golf, and that used the Halogens to fill in on main beam, they were like daylight.

I think however when you 'flash' (pull the stalk towards you) a separate halogen bulb lights up does it not?

I don't think it does, the Xenon's flash, the only Halogen bulb I have, is for the DRL's and side lights, and that's 35watt. |

I think it might depend on whether the xenons are on or not when you flash. I think a separate halogen bulb is used when the xenons are not on... the reasoning being that the xenons take time to reach optimum brightness, and using them for a flash is not really suitable. Really not sure to be honest!!

there is a halogen, it is used when pulling the stalk back for a quick flash... however when using highbeam the mirror tilts the Xenon up.
I find that generally it is ok, as i do a fair bit of driving on Welsh back roads, but my Mazda6 MPS was amazing, it was like daylight and the high beam projected much furhter than these bi-xenons (given that was a halogen high beam and xenon dipped). I dread to think what the standard lights are like, as I made sure I had xenons with the bulk of my mileage being late nights and early morning. |

Agreed, "main-beam" with tilting mirrors sucks.
After driving back from Stroud back home last night - my eyes were shattered. Felt as though I needed to eat more carrots after being used to the Xenons I had on my old X5.

Apparently it supplements the Xenons and shines through a channel to the front valence

I think the bi-xenons are fine on my car - even without the halogen fill-in headlights ???????
I have turned them up a couple of rotations though to throw the dipped light further along the road.

I have Bi-Xenon headlights on my Saab, whenever the headlights are on and you flick the stock back to switch on main beam, the shields on the projectors lift up and the Xenon beam is brighter, also supplemented by H7 Halogen bulbs.
Do the halogen bulbs not stay on when main beam is engaged on the E92? |

Bi Xenons
Hi All,
This was one of the first things I noticed coming from a 1 Series with Bi Xenons - the poorer beam at night. My 130i had an additional halogen lamp both sides that used to light up on main beam in addition to the Xenon mirror moving. Used to light up like daylight - the E92 set up is definitely not as good. That said, I have no rattles, creaks etc. the car is so much better put together in every other way. I do miss that 3.0 straight 6 engine though! |

Coming from a Saab 9-3 with halogen projectors I find the xenons on the e92 superb...
On mine, there is no halogen assistance either with main beam on or off. Flashing when main beam is off produces enough light from the cold xenons for the onlooker to be in no doubt of your intentions! |

CAn't get a video, sorry, but I checked again last night and first thing this morning with the headlamps off. I run the DRLs so the halogen bulbs are lit when I start up. Flashing the main beams DOES run off the xenons. They have an reduced brightness for a quick flash and increase in intensity if you hold the stock.

The increased brightness as you hold down the lever is simply as they warm up. On the F10 and the E92 the HID is used for the flash too so it's not uncommon with a D1S bulb.

On my 08 Saab, whenever you have all lights switched off, a quick flash of the main beam and the halogen bulbs only light up (because the xenons havent had time to activate), hold the stock back for a second or two and then you get the xenon flash as well as halogen flash. It also uses D1S xenon bulbs. |

The halogen bulbs are the DRL lamps that light the halo rings. They are in the inside lamp and are always lit. It's the xenon bulbs in the outside lamp that do the flash/main and full beam.

You must have got yours programmed to stay on all the time. Yeah i understand now, the Angel Eye bulbs are H8, funny little bulb with 2 heads. I'd be changing mine to 5000k white.
