Being an Idiot

Being an Idiot, I put some Redex Diesel Injector cleaner in my 335d. Having never used this stuff before I wanted to make sure the stuff went into the tank without just sitting on some filler pipe cap so I stuck the cap on the Redex stuff and pushed the neck into the filler neck. When I pulled it back out the plastic cap that covers the redex bottle top had gone into my tank

I've had a netting cable with the hook on the end down the filler neck but the cap is no where to be found.

Am I going to destroy anything with this foreign object in my tank?

Don't ask why I even bothered using this product, I'm just an idiot.

Wouldn't imagine it will do any harm, should just float on top of the diesel. Having said that I wouldn't want it in my tank either.

This sounds to me like a "one in a million" chance of success. You would have to have the vehicle tilting severely to the off side, and at the right fore and aft inclination.

Are you sure that the cap will even float? If your worried pay someone a shit load of money to pull the tank, otherwise forget about it and after a couple thousand of miles, it will be history.

Sorry that happened though...

Pull the back seat base up, then remove the hatch leading to the tank, remove the fuel pump and retrieve your lost plastic bit
All you'll have to remove is the fuel line and electrical connector

About 3/4 hour job really

Thx everyone.

Does the fuel pump have a filter over it to stop stuff like this getting in it?

Imagine the cap get stuck in the filter and stopped fuel getting transfer to the engine while it is running. Will be quite dramatic i can only imagine...

There will probably be a flap at the bottom of the filler neck and this will prevent it from entering the tank itself. However it might also cause you problems when filling up because it will then sit in the filler pipe and the fuel will back up and cut out the pump.

Take out the rear seats. And there is a tank entry cover. Unscrew it and you can fish it out from there.

Garage List
Chances are it will cause no harm but otherwise run the tank low on fuel and remove the access panel under the seat and remove the in-tank pump - you might be lucky and find it.

I find this sort of problem quite life affirming. Exactly the sort of daft shit I do whenever I attempt anything other than driving my car. I feel your pain OP.

To be honest I used redex in a mazda after terrible misfiring issues. Mangled an entire bottle in instead of a quarter and smashed the daylights out of the car and sorted it rught out.
