I caught myself wanting a 1000cc bike.. fortunately (or rather unfortunately), i wrecked the bike, and realized it was time for a change of priorities. Now I have a 330 which is a VERY nice car and does what it is built to do. Sure, I can't drop it into 3rd at 60mph and smoke the tires, but really.. how much better off is someone who can do that?

You have the best sport sedan (imo) on the market.. just sit back, turn up the radio, smile, and enjoy life.
Wise words.

Shouldn't BMW have been the first to cross 250hp and now 300hp in a production small sedan? And not in a limited-production "M" model.

BMW still has the most balanced package, but HP is their primary weakness today. HP, though, is one of the areas where you would NOT expect a weakness to be.

if you honestly think engines are BMW's weak point

there's more to an engine than HP number, and you'd know that if you'd actually driven and compared the two

why do you think BMW wins tons of those Ward's engine awards every year, it's probably because they suck and are underpowered

Just Wondering
It could be because everyone wants an M3, or M5, or M6, but wants it for the same price as their 325 or 330.
The 3 series chassis is so nice and well composed and capable that it can handle more power, which you can have, but you need to pony up the dough and pay for the aforementioned.

Many BMW owners/drivers want to believe that their series should be able to beat any other car on the road. That's a nice desire, and you can have nearly that if you buy an M car. But, the reality is that other manufacturers can build faster straightline performance, yet their chassis do not perform at the same level.
Overall, engineering for the masses is a compromise in every aspect. The less compromises one is willing to accept the more one needs to pay. Too many BMW supporters want no compromise even though their finances dictate otherwise.

I disagree. If performance is soley what they want, then one could find a low mileage E46 M3 for cheaper than what they paid for their e90s, even an E90 325. Or they could buy an E46 and plop in a super charger for $5k and outperform everything out there. Finances has nothing to do with it.

Bottom line is, the BMW e90 is faster than MOST of the cars out there in its same class. There are exceptions such as the IS350 which I believe is the fastest production sedan out there. Other than modified versions of the Audi, Golf, Subaru, and maybe a few others, there aren't that many that can outperform the e90.

I agree that BMWs are not the supreme kings of the road, but it does rank quite high up there in terms of performance.

and we have a joke over on the e46 forums, for whatever cars that can beat us off the line, we will get them in the twisties

1) Inline sixes trade power for smoothness and free-revving...V6 are always more powerful all things being equal.

2) Stop trying to belittle the E90 by categorizing it with cheap ass tuner cars like the Civic (BTW those of you that try to turn BMW's into tuner cars just ruin the marque)

3) Some of you need to get over your egos. BMW has one of the most prestigious images out there. That's not enough for you. One of the best handling packages on the road...not enough for you...most beautiful, smooth award winning engines...not enough....Your egos dictate that not only do you want to arrogantly drive around in a BMW but you need to dominate the road in every category...GET OVER YOURSELVES BOYS....If you want to dominate off the line go get a Chrysler shit box with a HEMI and leave the rest of us who realize what a great car really is alone .

3.5-liter V6, dual VVTi, twin cam, 4 valves per cylinder. 268 hp at 6,200 rpm, 248 lb-ft at 4,700 rpm
Power to wheels and how it's delivered matter more than the quoted HP numbers. A mate of mine had the 6-cyl Accord (something like 260-270 hp) and found his 328i had more effective power delivery. Just sayin'

I see people doing this occasionally, either I'll smile and nod back, or I'll mash the throttle and have some fun with it. Don't take everything so personally.

I once had a guy like you in front of me and when I floored it under the overpass my exhaust echoed everywhere (I do this every time I go under an overpass and never fails to make me smile) and as I broke left to turn left (at a light) the guy gets caught up in traffic, 20 seconds later he goes by me hanging out his window and screams "WHAT ******!?", apparently he was so self absorbed he actually thought I was trying to piss him off or something.

*edit*

Wow, I just realized this is from 2006!
