Hey,

I was unlucky today. While I was driving on the highway I was hit be small rock which created a pit on my windshield. It is right in my vision and is pissing me off big time. I went to some local glass specialists and they all agreed that it is impossible to fix because there is no damage to the deeper layer of the glass. The little chip is only on the outside layer of the glass.
I just want to ask some of you guys that, is there any products that will fix that little pit? I found Poly pit filler and polisher that suppose to fix that.

I also bought locally (Canadian tire) some windshield repair compound but I am not feeling that stuff. This is it:


What to do...?
Did anybody fix something like that?

yea, i was in my aunt's minivan on sunday and we got hit by a good size pebble...got 2 nice cracks/dimples in the windscreen. they had ron look at it...dunno how it turned out tho cause i havent called to see....i woulda freaked if it were mine

You better get to it fast...

I have an unrepairable 5 inch crack that started off just like that. The cracks just appeared out of nowhere and it's growing an inch a day. I have made an insurance claim and is awaiting parts/install appointment.

I am suprise how fragile bmw windshield is.It is by far the worst windshield i have ever own.

Pilkington makes a large percentage of european car manufacturers screens

that can fill it temp. optically it will be the same, but it might keep it from spreading. thats what a "pro" would do, so you can choose to do it on your own...or pay someone

Can we get the Non-Comfort windshield as a replacement? Will the rain sensor, etc. still work?

I am tired of getting a pit every few days!

the pro also drills it where/when appropriate, I rather pay a trusted pro to do it and pay a bit now, than cheap out now and pay a lot later on.

You need to drill enough so you eliminate any air that's trapped between the first layer of glass and the vinyl laminimate that's situated between the two glass layers.

I had 2 pits on my windshield, and after Ron took a look at both of them, he determined that only one of the two needed to be treated, the other one wouldn't spread.

I feel your pain. I drove my last car nine years and never had a window chip or crack. After nine weeks of driving the E90 I got a chipped windshield.

Not sure how it works up there in the 51st State, but my insurance company (Alfa) will pay to fix small chips and cracks and waive my deductible. I just call a toll free number and they arrange to have someone come out and take care of it. It was fixed the same day I called. I also had a choice of which company I wanted to do the work. I think they do this to encourage customers to get the small stuff fixed so it doesn't result in them paying to replace a completely damaged windshield. What ever the reason, I thought it was a great deal.

I believe this service/arrangement is fairly common, but just not well known if you don't read the statement stuffers, etc. It's definitely worth placing a call to your agent just to see.

I got my own "constellation" of very small pits, luckily not in line of sight. Something like your smaller one, but about 6 or 7 of them, spread over some square inch.
(Standing still, me inside, really windy, saw the rock or whatever coming, go figure).

I went to the best-quoted glass repairing shop around here and the guy only shaked his head and said "sorry for that, I won't do anything with it, the windshield you have is too expensive".
He didn't even say "However, I think it won't spread". It looks pretty harmless, but you guys are getting me worried with your spreading cracks.

Well, I do have the climate comfort option so it looks I'm to blame .

I'd like to know how it worked out for you.

has anyone heard of this synthetic "wax" similar to rain-x thats applied on the windshield and prevents rock chips by making the surface more slippery so rocks and rain water just glances away?

Our dealership tried to sell us that service thats similar to the paint/interior protection. price was $200 and if anything happens to the windshield, we'd get up to $5000 deductible on glass repair. we didnt purchase the service, however we just got a small pit on our glass as well, and reading that this glass is supposidly softer...it might be worth it for the permanent rain-x.

The same thing happened to my 330i last week on I-5, but my "pit" is larger than yours, approximately 7mm, and also in my line of sight. I contacted Safelite and someone will come to my home this Saturday to repair it. Personally, I would prefer to have a professional person do this type of repair job. They quoted about $60 to repair this and a smaller crack (total 2 on my windshield). Kevbh mentions above that insurance companies will cover for the the cost of these type of windshield repairs which is true except for my insurance company State Farm...so I'll have to pay. The cost of replacing the entire windshield is a lot more.

that wax sounds like snake oil...if that was the case, they would market it for the entire car...

Oddly, i find my windshield to be just as durable as any other car ive owned in the past. I do 90% highway driving, and I get pelted daily...some loud enough to make me cringe but I dont have any chips....yet.

funny you should say that, the pits that I do have on my windshield were from collisions that didn't sound as LOUD as other ones (which didn't leave any mark at all), I guess it'll depends on the angle, speed, shape and size of the debris

I don't think you guys are understanding what he said. The windshield is pitted, not cracked. It's not going to spread or anything like that. It just has a little pit in it.

I think the polyresin stuff you found will probably do the trick. Hopefully it will fill the little nick and give your glass a smooth finish again. It probably won't make the pit completely invisible though.

Show photos if you use the kit. Before and After. I tried the kit but I did not get good results. I was able to mask my pits only slightly. I receive two pits two days after delivery. On the hightway, I stay far away from freight trucks or any truck with monster tires.
