Painting M-Tech lip... questions
Hello all,
I am going to buy the M-Tech lip from eBay for my Titanium Silver e92 and have a friend at work paint it for me (he is a professional painter). I have a couple of questions since I don't know anything about paint: 1) Will this 12oz. spray can be enough to paint the entire lip? http://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-Touch-Up...f6f0fe&vxp=mtr 2) Should I go the paint gun route to get a better quality instead of the spray can? If yes, where can I buy the BMW titanium silver paint and how much do I need? 3) What else do I need to buy? Primer? Clear coat? Thanks! |

No response? oh well, I just bought the aero lip and spray can so we'll see how it comes out. It'll cost me a 6 pack of beer and I'll let the painter at my job do it for me... I'll post pics to show the results.

If he's as pro as you claimed to be, why don't you just ask him directly? I don't think there are many pro painters here... no offense.

I wouldn't use an aresol type paint on your lip. Im assuming its some sort of laquer or enamel which wont hold up as well as quality automotive paint. You should be able to get any Bmw color code paint at all paint suppliers such as Dupont, Sherwin Williams, Basf, PPG etc. You just need to find a supplier near you and you shouldn't have to purchase more than a half pint which would be plenty to do a lip. Of course you will need the clearcoat and activator also. I would not recommend spray silver in single stage. Its really easy to make it look like shit. I have been using Spies Hecker bases on all my Bmw jobs because the match is phoenominal. As is Glasurit. These are pricy paints but they go a long way. I have painted my front bumper, rear bumper, csl spoiler and have enough left over to do side skirts from a pint of Monaco blue by Spies.

Of course you can use the rattle can, but it will not be nearly as good even if you send between the coats. One can is enough and you neec to primer->paint->clear.

OK you guys convinced me. This is not a Honda Civic, it's a BMW and deserves a little more than a half assed rattle can paint job. I bought all the supplies required at a paint store to get it done right with a paint gun and it cost me only about $100. I'll post pics of the finished job when the lip is on... probably by next week end.
BTW, how do I attach the lip to the bumper? Double sided tape or does it bolt on? |

Best quote I was able to get around here was $150... Plus with the leftover paint, I'll be able to re-paint in a year or two when its all chipped with gravel and stuff...

My friend put on the color coat yesterday, and I put the lip on the car (didn't snap the left and right edges in place not to mess up the paint) to verify the color matching. It looks like a good match so far. He still needs to put the clear coat on. I can't wait to put that lip on...
Pics of the lip... Without: With (don't mind the fit on the corners, i didn't snap it in place) I'll take better pics once the paint job is finished, even though I know there are tons of threads on here about this aero-lip |
