car running rough when first started
My car is starting rough when not started for a while i was thinking sparkplugs anyone have a similar issue. It shakes somewhat or idles really hard when not in motion. When driving the car is fine i am only having trouble when the car is started and when its warming up.

Mine does the same thing (07 335) maybe 25% of the time for about 10-15 seconds after start. If I give it gas goes like normal. Dealership said it's normal for turbo. Car is fine after that.
Anyone else? |

It is all the emission control bull crap controlling the NO(x), etc which needs to be stabilized after cold start... my e93 does start up a lot rougher than my old e46, which by then had over 90K on it. When I first start the car, with the hood open I can hear the metal clatter, but it subsides after couple of seconds. If it bothers you, install an underhood insulation pad which will attenuate all of the higher pitched clatter but you'll still enjoy the pleasant low rumble roar of the engine. My 2009 e93 did not come with hood insulation pad, I got one from ESC Tuning which amazingly quieted the engine down. and as side bonus will preserve the paint shine on the hood by keeping it cooler.

Another vote for normal. As long as it settles down after a minute, I doubt there's a problem. BMW engines aren't known for their quiet idle.

My '07 335i sedan does this too. Idles somewhat rough with RPMs jumping around between 800 and 1500 rpm until the car's warmed up or I put it in gear. Once in gear, all is normal.
I was a little worried about this as I've never owned a car that did this....so glad to hear from everyone this is normal. Thanks, |

I have been having the same issue. Rough idle , then at stop lights it idles like a 67 Camaro. Then it started going into limp mode during hard driving. Bought a scan tool and found out it's the vanos. Changing that this week. In your case if it starts up and idles weird for a non or 2, and then it's 100% fine, I think there is no issue

It's not normal. I just had the same problem with my '08 335 coupe. The dealer replaced the HPFP, spark plugs, and all 6 injectors. The did the pump and plugs first but the problem was still there so I really think it was a problem with the injectors.

Could be bad injectors causing misfires

I had similar cold start issues. Car went in today. SA called and they replaced the HPFP. This was the third trip in. First was long cranks and they replaced the low fuel pressure sensor. Second trip back for long cranks and the updated the software. That worked for two months or so and then I started getting the wild fluctuations in RPM at idle.
So - I'll try this and hopefully things will be back to normal. The dealer also installed the BMW Performance Exhaust for me. I'm anxious to pick it up tomorrow. |
