I don't know I have USB in glovebox. I just tried center console USB (where I connect my iPod) and nothing happened when I turn on my M.

Yep, the glovebox usb port is for updating maps and loading music unto the internal hard drive of the navigation unit. Can't use the center console USB to do those things.

I formatted my 32gb USB to fat32 and saved all files (1 file + 1 big folder). And plugged into USB in glovebox. Then fired up but nothing happened. What do I need to do??
(Mine is 2011 x5m built in 2010. Nav version is 2010)

From a "CBS Information" report (if you don't have a copy of this report you can ask a dealership for one) the following information was revealed:

The 2009 M3 had a build date of: 10/01/08.
The car came from the factory with program version: E89X-08-09-520
The car had been upgraded (before I acquired it) to program version: E89X-09-03-520

With program version E89-09-03-520, I was not able to upgrade the NAV via USB.

The dealership upgraded the program version to E89X-13-03-504, and charged me 1.5 hours labour. After the program version upgrade, I was immediately able to perform the NAV update via USB.

If you don't have a "CBS Information" report, as others have said, when using the NAV, check to see if you can toggle the "info" box (top right hand corner of screen) by pressing down on the iDrive controller. If you are able to toggle the "info" box, you will most likely be able to perform the NAV update via USB. If you can't toggle the "info" box you will most likely need the program version upgraded on your car. I use the term "most likely" as I don't think it is yet known exactly which program version enabled NAV update via USB, but the ability to toggle the "info" box seems to be a great indicator.

As an added bonus, upgrading the program version provided the following benefits:
- The iDrive phone interface received a significant overhaul.
- Eliminated a bug I have been annoyed with since purchasing the car. After power cycling the car, the iDrive would default to FM or SAT, even if the "Presets" was being used when the car was turned off. Now when I power cycle the car, the iDrive stays on "Presets".
If I got nothing from the screen after insert the usb into slot, upgrade the firmware may slove this problem???
I have done evertyhing in right way, but I am still not able to update the nav maps...

I bought a Sandisk brand as some of forum members used it and completed updates without any issue. And.. guess what, it worked for me.
I copied exact same files to new Sandisk 32GB usb drive from exact same machine and it worked. I don't know why but it worked. Thanks for all help guys!

I'm trying to determine whether or not i need the firmware upgrade by going to the Nav screen and toggling to the Info in the top right corner. Only problem is I don't see that in the top right corner? Can anyone provide info on this method? I've tried split/full screen while in nav but nothign is there except for my Phone signal.

100% way to be certain is to download the maps, put them on a USB stick and plug it into the USB port in the Glovebox. If it prompts to begin the update, you just need to get the code and go. If not, you most likely need a update.

Based on the previous messages, if you need to get a USB stick, grab a Sandisk or a Lexar (BMW uses Lexar for their USB media).

Did you copy just config.nfm and pkgdb to the root of the drive?

If yes to both, then it may be a software issue on the iDrive.

And yes an Indy with an auto logic can update the CIC as long as they have the optical head for the unit.
Hey Dracon, I downloaded the torrent you posted but I seem to be missing config.nfm and pkgdb. Did I miss something?

Did you extract the archive? Use your favorite archiver program (7Zip, WinRAR, WinZIP) and extract the 7z.001 file. It'll decompress into a folder and you'll find config.nfm and pkgdb inside.

My car was bulit in 2010. When I plug the usb in the slot, there is no message on the screen after wating for a lot of time. Do I need to update the firmware or change another usb stick???
Thank you.
p.s. How to persuade dealer to update the fimrware, they said if there is no problem, they can't update it for me.

Have you tried another USB stick? isugoo had the same problem until he tried a sandisk made USB stick and then it worked.

Any car built after 09/09 shouldn't require a software update in order to update maps.

Also, what maps did you download and put on the USB? Business (Motion/CIC-MID) requires a different map than Professional (Premium/CIC-HIGH).

Right here!! =)

You can choose the torrent file or magnet link, it all leads to the same place.

Make sure you extract the archive first (using WinZIP or 7Zip) then copy config.nfm and pkgdb to a 32gb FAT32 formatted USB stick.

And do you know why the screen doesn't display all version information?
I saw a lot of people display all infermation in two lines, not like mine.

I have a 2010 e92. Couldn't get the USB port to accept the USB so ended up burning a DVD.
I was asked for the fsc code. Everything downloaded fine but after reboot I am stuck with a " starting navigation system" message.

I took the car in today to get a firmware update. Hopefully this will sort the problem.

I hope I didn't brick the CIC. I will know next week...

I advise everyone to try to plug a USB in the glovebox before proceeding. If it doesn't work have a firmware upgrade first.

Don't believe the posts that tell you that a car produced after 2009 will update automatically.

Did you leave the USB stick in the glove box USB for a while, like couple of minutes? It takes a while before the system will prompt you for FCC code and let you know that newer maps have been found.
