Active Autowerke exhaust question?

I have searched and found some info on their system but not enough to determine if I should pick one up (used one available for a good price). I was wondering if any AA owners can give me some feedback (impression, quality, sound, etc) or any previous owners even better why you changed, etc.

Thanks!

I have the AA exhaust since 2 months:

quality: very good
sound: very good to.
performance: is not easy to feedback but I have make my best time at track (1/4)with the exhaust Aroud 0,1 sec better. (I have the AA processor to).

drone: at 1800-2200 rpm you have a drone and I don't like it.

exept the drone between 1800-2200 rpm, I like this AA product.

A+

I just put mine on last week. This is my first catback exhaust so I wasn't sure what to expect. Like the person above me said, there is a little bit of drone for me right around 2100rpm when I punch it in 5th and 6th. The strange thing is it only happens really when I'm cruising around 50-60. So any real highway driving on major interstates (70mph) isn't bad at all. The drone really isn't terrible but it does get on my nerves sometimes. It sounds like its coming from the roof or back center console but I haven't had time to really locate it yet.

I would say the quality of materials is excellent but the install was absolutely horrible for the shop that put mine on. It also did not come with very detailed instructions so I suspect that didn't help things out. The exhaust also had a leak where it connected to the original BMW piping because the clamps would not seal so I ended up getting it welded on.

And lastly to top things off... the two shops I went to couldn't seem to get the exhaust tips on completely straight. The left pipe protrudes a bit more than the right and just upsets me enough for me to mention it. I guess the problem was that it was running into the diff so they couldn't completely align it properly.

I do like the sound though. And assuming I can solve the drone issue (which I sort of doubt), then its a very unobtrusive exhaust... which is what I wanted. It just sounds more bass-rich and has a nice burble. Driving through my parking garage everyday still puts a smile on my face lol...

Performance: You won't see any noticeable butt-dyno gains. It might just be in my head but I do feel like throttle response has improved a little bit though.

Overall: I like it because I've convinced myself it was worth the price... Although sometimes I wonder if there were better choices out there.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have questions.

Thanks for the feedback guys!

Not quite sure I'm sold on it to be honest!

Don't mean to thread jack here but Oddjob do you have any drone with the downpipes and the AA exhaust? I'm thinking about picking some up eventually and am wondering if it will make the drone worse or less noticeable.

Installed this on Jon's E92 about 2 months ago. The installation was very clean as it's a full replacement and the tips fill out the factory bumper (as well as the Vorsteiner add on) extremely well. The sound is a nice deep grumble that is not too loud, we had no issues driving it to and from Vegas (19 hours round trip). The car is also regularly driven and is certainly not too obnoxious to slip around town.

well TBH yeah i have some drone, but its honestly minimal... its honestly the same drone i got when i had the stock dp-back exhaust with the golf-tee mod done via the neccesity for a water/meth vacuum line. i really dont know any exhaust that doesnt drone at all... the drone range is around 2-2.2k but if you're a manual tranny (i am) or are always in manual mode u never have to hear it, you can always be in a gear lower or higher than the couple 100 RPM it drones at

But again, its not bad at all, my friends are picky with exhausts and havn't said a bad thing about mine cruising or full throttle.

good luck on your choice

I didn't notice any drone on Jon's car with the RR downpipes and AA exhaust. It is a more aggressive sound but I honestly had no issues with the setup on a long haul trip or everyday use.

Very true, sound is so subjective that one person's loud is another person's peace and tranquility

Nick, can you clarify? If I remember correctly the AA Exhaust required the stock exhaust system to be cut, it was not a direct bolt on. I remember reading that in their directions. Has it changed?

Here is their install document: http://www.activeautowerke.com/pdf/product32a.pdf

Part of the tools needed are a Reciprocating Saw. Also, "-Remove entire exhaust system and cut off as shown"

One reason I went with a full system that bolted and off.

yo nick, i have had AA exhaust on my car for a little over a year now and all i can say is that i really like the exhaust. the only thing i would change if i could is that it drones a bit around 2k-3k rpms when im doing highway driving. The sound is great, the tips i find fit the car very well and the build is great since i have had no problems with this exhaust so far. Hope this helps

Yep, you cut the stock flanges off and mount them to the new exhaust. We did the same on our install.
