NEW JB4 Firmware - 23rd May 2012
Just a note to fellow JB4 users, new firmware is out dated 23rd May 2012 (US 052312)
http://www.n54tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10605 Sounds like big changes to map 5 (and Map3 for meth users) 1) Revised map 5 auto learning for more aggressive and responsive tuning, including support for various E85 and race fuel mixtures. Auto tuning range is from 12psi to 17psi. 2) Revised map 3 progressive mapping for more aggressive torque response and smoother transitions between no meth flow and full meth flow. Also, anyone here using the "AUTO DTC ON" function on the JB4? I been using it for weeks, love it, the car is always ready for a hoon without having to press the damn DTC button. But the cruise control doesn't work when you put DTC off manually. odd. |

Hi mate,
Been waiting for someone to discuss this so I could bring it up too. I hate the N54Tech website as it never seems to have 'clear' information although perhaps that is just me. That page you linked to for example has a load of words, but it doesn't say 'download XXXX firmware here' 'upload it like this' etc.... So here is what I am planning to do and I just wondered if you could assist me. I have seen the first post has attached to it a file called 'N54_052312.HEX' and a Readme which I have downloaded. When I get in the car I am going to put the car into first stage ignition with the USB cable (from the JB4) connected to my laptop, I will find the com port it has decided to go for and make sure that's all good, then I am going to go 'File>Upload Firmware' and then select the .HEX file above. I assume the rest will be straightforward and then I just switch on the car, start datalogging (if I want) and off I go, right? Is the .HEX file meant to be only 81kb? Anything else I might have missed? Thanks Matt PS - I would also like to reserve the right to completely switch off/on the fuel/oil guage hijack. Or actually, what I would like is to have the fuel guage hijack disabled and the oil temp guage to be switched on at 80%+ throttle. Can that be done? My current position is that both oil/fuel are set to hijack at what I THINK is 50% and fuel is clearly Boost, whilst Oil could be anything - its clearly different to the Fuel though. Thanks again. |

Just found a walkthrough for the firmware so I am now cool with that - assuming it really IS only 81kb?
The guages though, are still a slight mystery as there are so many options!! Rgds Matt |

You get used to gauge hijacking! You will have Gauge highjacking to only come at more than 50% throttle - I think this is referred to as Stealth Mode you can switch this off (Steering control Speedo 5--Tach 6)! I have boost on fuel and Meth flow on oil - works great.
The .Hex file will take a few mins to upload, there is a counter in one of the cells showing upload progress. Once complete you are ok to start the car. I've had some of these changes in an Alpha Map and tried map5. Immediately boosted to 17psi and felt pretty strong. Once the car is fixed of its current issues, I hope to get this all working smoothly. Smoother Transitions on map 3 sounds good, more aggressive torque combined with DTC enabled sounds dangerous in the wet!!

Well I just got home after running the update in my work car park.
It's much better now, although I wasn't complaining before. Feels a more agressive but equally smooth and also clearly boosting more strongly than before. Phil I do have the 50% or whatever it is thing on. I think I am going to turn off the fuel one and change the oil guage to show boost. Do you guys all have the 'flash' to show that the car is warmed up? Instructions say it is based on 160f I think and it appears to happen in my car when the oil guage is still showing more or less cold. Does this truly indicate that it's safe to begin pushing the car a bit harder? Otherwise I am really liking the JB4's features vs the old JB3 - its clearly miles better and for the money, its a great bit of kit. Matt |

Until the car gets to 160f (just over minimum oil temp bar) its running stock boost. Once past this you get the full monty. Haven't set the hazard flasher, I tend to wait until the car is at operating temp before going WOT.

I always have boost on fuel, set your display to read miles left in your tank, and you have no use for a fur gauge.
As far as all the settings and speedometer positions, print up the Excel file terry posted up on his jb4 sticky and leave it in your visor. That's what I've done and it works great. |

I didn't even know what the flasher was for until today. I thought it was a shift indicator suggesting I gear down that was behaving oddly because it's a DTC car. Hey ho. I too waited for optimum temp before booting it.
I have also now printed the sheet - I was asking because I guess the sheet I had seen didn't feature gauge hijack configurations as such. I now have what I believe is the latest one. Matt |

As we're all JB4 geeks..
Whos planning to upgrade to the new G5 Board? http://www.n54tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15904 Or even go for the free 15 Ohm resistor upgrade? Perhaps Neil can let us know whether these upgrade paths are offered to UK customers too?

Or you want a Speed limit defeat, CPS offsetting, finer AFR tuning for just $50.
There are a few guys this side of the pond running Upgraded turbos, and others still running the 15Ohm mod..

Hi Guys,
15ohm board for those needing higher than 18psi. Dont Need/want CPS etc. Proven Mod! G5 for those running upgraded turbo's, want need CPS, AFR or want more tuning ability (Not the general customer) IF you want either then its a BMS direct thing. Nothing we are involved with. Neil |

The G5 board is one of the reason why I'm selling my Cobb AP and sticking with the JB4. I'm interested in the NLS and 2 step which should be fun
BTW I have fitted an m3 LSD with full rear subframe, m3 ARBs and Birds B3 suspension and the traction is insane. Alignment is very slightly off so I haven't pushed it too hard but I'm thoroughly impressed with it. Matt you need to activate Auto Code Clearing from the steering wheel menu for that. |

Matt - I was going to say you need to print off the steering wheel buttons cheat sheet and keep it in the car.
I'm putting on new FW at lunchtime! The N54tech forum page give the latest interface software links near the top of post 1, but oddly the firmware download is always at the bottom of post 1. Updated cheat sheets are posted on post 1 when released. The gauges are easy, just go through it logically and choose 'stealth mode' if you want normal gauges until 50% throttle. I use this to avoid upsetting the missus if she borrows the car. I use boost on fuel in stealth mode and keep oil on oil (oil temp is the one guage I want see 100% of the time!). It's perfect, quick blip on the downchange and up pops the boost gauge (sorry, you've got a playstation gearbox) The Oil temp flasher is 160degF (about 75degC) so it is just above our minimum reading of 70degc, but its well on the way to warming up then, mines at 90 within a minute or two of 75. Re the DPfix, you can 'auto code clear' with the JB4, but this will clear ALL codes and errors including ones you might want to see. But AFAIK when you set the JB4 to map zero (disconnected fron CAN bus) for service or to allow another CAN connection (OBD reader for example) then the CEL lights will come back on as the JB4 cannot see them anymore? Can anyone confirm this? Personally i've hardwired in the old hardware DPfix so that just stops the error in the first place and it even preserves correct post CAT lambda readings so if the car was put on an OBD analyser it shows fully functioning CATs! The main thing is that I want to compare it to the COBB tune with which I'm not 100% happy since the bigger turbos went in. Also want to try the meth integration, but that's a more long term project as I have to see whether the Snow Performance SafeInjection works together with the JB4. I'm also planning on trying out the PROcede, which is also right now in the process of getting updated. Alpina_B3_Lux
