CDV delete

I know this topic has been covered a billion times and I've spent the last week or so poring over the threads and have pretty much made up my mind to delete the clutch delay valve...

Some history I'm 29 and have had an MT vehicle since I was 18; an integra GS-R coupe and 2 audi b5 S4s. To anyone familiar, both of these gearboxes were very slick and shifted like butter. The 01E is incredible but I digress... long pedal travel and clutch engagement point aside, this tranny in the e92, as a whole package is a completely different animal to me and had me doubting my decision to dive into bimmer and my stick driving ability as a whole for a little while after I bought the car.

It's been about 11 months since I've had it and I've pretty much fully adapted to the clutch modulation in terms of around town driving, parallel parking etc with the delay. The only frontier I've yet to conquer is the 1-2 shift at WOT (full load), as I feel as though even if you execute the shift in identical fashion as a smooth shift you can get the lurch... Many have described their findings with the CDV delete that you'll notice the difference more in the lower gears at lower revs i.e. around town, parking lots etc but I was hoping it would aid in aggressive driving as well. I've tried getting on the gas more quickly once I understood the mechanics involved and experienced mixed results.

Basically I dredged up this topic because there hasn't been any recent chatter about it and was wondering about people's experiences, any $.02 would be appreciated. I don't make it a practice to flog my car much less drag it or anything as I plan on owning it for some years, but I do enjoy wringing it out every once in a while

We'ere the same age, and similar past cars. I'm not sure if my CDV delete helped my 1-2 shift during hard accell or if I just got used to it. Probably a combination of both, a year and a half into owning the car I feel much more comfortable with aggressive driving and shifting.

Regarding the pedal travel, have you looked into the BMS clutch stop?

Damn, your color combo is stellar.

I have considered the clutch stop as it's a painfully simple and inexpensive mod, however after a while I was pretty comfortable with the engagement point.

I feel like I'm just having a problem flat out, like 1-2 shift near redline I just can't seem to dial in smoothly with consistency. Not sure if 328 vs. 335 might be dissimilar either. I may give a clutch stop a shot as well

I had a similar problem with the 1-2 shift. The CDV delete will help a lot, if you still have trouble after it, you may need to use more finesse and less speed. Hopefully someone else can chime in.

I removed mine 3 weeks after picking up my e92 07 328i. Never regretted it. You can always put it back if you don't like it.

I replaced my cdv with a modified one and it was totally worth it. I also have the ebay clutch stop which pairs nicely with the modded cdv. I've noticed that the all the shifts are noticeably better, especially the 1-2 shift.

Totally removed mine, easy as pie. Don't forget that there are 2 clips, 1 in front and 1 in back of the valved. Night and day difference. You won't regret it.

Redline D6 made my transmission smooth

Redline D6 made my transmission smooth(in the BMW).
I also have an Integra so I know what you mean by
smooth shifts . Also put some redline in that though not
D6 and it helped it as it was at 220 k miles.
Honda makes the smoothest manual I have ever used.
Now if I put in short shift kit in the BMW it would be pretty
close with the D6 to the smoothness of the Integra.

I'm considering this as well. I've driven stick-shift cars all my life and can't get the hang of my new (to me) 328i.

Also, do you have a hard shift into second? I'm thinking of changing the fluid to see if it helps but the car only has 27k on it.

Thanks for the replies guys I'm getting it done next weekend. My car has the BMW Performance shirt shifter so I feel I'm halfway there. I'll see how it feels without the valve then consider the clutch stop

1-2 Isn't bad because the B5 I came from was the same way. Occasionally I'll accidentally grind the hell out of third. I don't know why this is, maybe because I had a short shift kit in my Audi. I've also found when I come to a stop it's very common that my car won't go into first again without a struggle. I understand why this happens but it's almost everytime in this car.

I've owned Honda Prelude MT before, and that car's transmission is not easy to beat.... I eliminated CDV within the first month of ownership... So the clutch has become pretty good after that. But i doubt it made any 1->2 shift difference.

So far i heard only MT oil change really helps. I didn't try that yet though.

Does anyone feel this mod is NOT worth it? I guess I always felt the MT on my 328 felt pretty good compared to my other cars but now I'm wondering what I'm missing. I know publications like C&D are always praising the transmission too so what gives?

As well as the CDV delete, I would recommend the Rogue Engineering reinforced transmission mounts. They make even more improvement to shift quality than deleting the CDV in my opinion...

Removed it in my first E90, my dad's E90 and my second E90. Do it. The difference was really, really apparent going from my dad's car to mine. It totally fixes the lurch and makes the car so much better to drive.

I doubt cdv delete makes any difference to shift quality.

You'll control clutch better with no delays, and shift faster, but that should be it.

My gut feeling is, 1->2 shift's problem is related to reverse gear somehow, since the gearbox has to prevent rear's engagement while moving forward.

I've been reading about CDV delete for years.

My question is: "Will deleting the CDV make any difference in normal shifts (letting the clutch out slowly) and if so, why?

My understanding is that the CDV stops the clutch from engaging quickly during fast shifts. I can see how deleting it would help power shifting. But I don't understand why deleting the CDV would smooth out normal shifting.

Any help would be appreciated.

It definitely helps - I used to feel a slight hot spot on my flywheel when I drove out of the garage in the morning with a cold car... Slight un-even pedal feedback. With the cdv gone, so is the shaking when cold! Never had other issues though with shifting at 80k minus the fact that it was tough to perfectly shift w the cdv... driven stick-shifts all my life. just Do it!

Hey guys, just did this today and car is still under warranty. I did not modify the CDV so it is now missing from the car. Does anyone think this would be noticeable during routine maintenance from the dealer (oil change / brakes / fluid changes mostly) and even if it was, could they deny something like an oil change (unrelated to the transmission) because the car had been modified?

I removed it within a few month of the purchase and never had problems with dealer. I replaced the valve with another one without internals though. So visually it looks the same.
