Anyone else xperiencing reduced MPG?

Removed filter and added K&N

I removed the charcoal filter when I installed the new K&N and swoop scoops. A nice performance improvement from stock, but very little sound difference. May be a bit early to tell, but I believe that I improved by about 1.0 mpg.

"SERVICE ENGINE SOON" light on.

As of yesterday I noticed a "service engine soon" display. I called the dealer/service who stated that this usually indicates an emmisions issue.

I have removed the charcoal filter and added the K&N.

Has anyone else had this issue ???

finally did this mod today. also went ahead and replaced the stock air filter with a k&n drop-in filter.

my butt dyno tells me that throttle response is improved. also feels smoother throughout the power band.

soundwise, it seems to be a little louder in the higher rpm range, but that's about it.

all in all, pretty good.

Did mod lastnight and dropped in an afe air filter replacing the stock on.

Fuel econ: improved around town/highway. No numbers yet.

Performance: Feels it has a little more quicker.

Sound: Can't tell - got noisy Pirelli run-flats (hate them) need a good non-

RFT replacement - any suggestions?!

Installation: Be careful of not dropping any tools while performing mod. Make sure the half rubble ball thing gets put back in place prior to re-installing the filter housing in place. Mine was off and was needed to be repositioned. Encounted not codes as a result of mod.

Can't - there are some torx screws underneath that would be very difficalt to reach. And if you drop any parts, tought to recover.

just did this mod today in about 20 minutes in my driveway thanks alot for the great write up, also replaced my filter with a K&N, I could feel the acceleration to be a bit more snappier, especially in the lower gears. Seems to have diminished that slow pull thru going from 1st to 2nd gears in the steptronic

WOOOOOOO Cheap & EZ

Just did the mod the response is much quicker than usual on the throttle. Man that charcoal filter looks very restrictive.

anyone have a close up of the box after the filter was removed, but before the sanding was performed. I kind of curious how hard this part is.

How hard is the actual charcoal filter part? Does it feel like a sandy stone?

Debating if I want to go this route or just get a totally different intake.

Its hard plastic like the material of the airbox just get you a dremel are a small grinder and use that on it once done make sure you wash your air box out just in case there is any debris. 45 MIN job.

for the square shaped tube that connects in the front of the air box, there is a part that sticks out further on the bottom of the air box. Is that part supposed to be inside or outside of the square shaped tube? right now it is inside of the tube and the two clips on the side are in place. My car sounds fine while driving but when I first start it up, it's louder and not smooth sounding. It's almost like a popping sound.

I jUst did it last night and took the filter out of the box and tossed it in. did the charcol removal as well cleaned it out 3x with soapy water to make sure no bits got sucked into the engine. However the car has worse throttle response and roll ons are crazy slow. i remember doign a roll form 40mph in 6th gear was like damn this is fast before and now its slightly faster than my neon making 130hp in a 5th gear roll on. I checked everything like 3x. gonna go check it again. I know what im doing with cars since well ive raced and i know i didnt make any stupid mistakes. Did those that disconnectec the battery have everythign fix or what. The car does only have about 40ish miles on it as it sits but they way these sytems work is it shuld adjust immeaditly to the changes rather than after 50 miles. Also dont wanna loose all my settings and data in the nav system if i disconnect the battery, Will this happen?

Alright I did absoutely everything nothing is loose too tight disconencted whatever i've run every single possible combo of stock filter back in K&N maf out, no filter at all. I cleaned the MAF and its spotless, oil from filter was not issue, disconnected battery everything.
If the problem doesn't work its self out tomorrow or anyone sugguest something im gonna sell it even tho ive had it for a week.
Car will probally do 0-60 in 5seconds or whatever but any gear roll on from under 4k or whatever is just like an average pos honda civic. NOT a 250hp car.

Hey DTM-power, I remember when I had my airbox out, it was REALLY hard to get the air pipe on the back (going to the MAF), you might want to check that, also the connection to the cold air intake at the front was kind of abstract, check that also, but I'm betting on the air pipe to the back of it. Good luck! Don't give up yet, lot's of us have done it, so it's got to be something in your execution, and therefore can be fixed.

Well nothings wrong with what ive done. Cars going to bmw tomorrow car.
Ran to the speedlimiter a handfull of times tonight and launched it 0-80ish at least 2 dozen times car runs FINE above 4gs and sux below it. Disconnected the battery then took it on the previously mentioned 150mile drive to "reset" whatever people mentioned.
It's something in the ecu or something is cracked post maf.
Well, well see what the local guys can see.

Damn this sux.

I'm going to install my K&N tonight.
When you say cut the filter, why is that? doesn't the stock oem filter just come off (like every other car out there)??
