Stock Airbox N54

Anyone have a stock airbox lying around that they want to donate to a project I'm going to work on?

Yeah. 335iSSA and I had the same brilliant idea. I never liked any of the current airboxes on the market. DCIs have heatsoak; the only good ones are about $1k. So I was thinking of copying Mr. 5 and Dinan and getting a cold air ram set up with a used airbox.

I bought one for $70 shipped and am in the process of installing the mod. It's not as simple as it looks. It's very tight with stock DVs and the bracing of the e92.

AIT Mod...

Well at least the Dinan has some very good numbers to back it up, but for $750.oo when it was on sale just does not justify pulling the trigger on it. Take lots of pix of the modification in progress. GL

be careful having a low intake around this region. We have lot of rain and lot of random puddles. One wrong decision and water enters the engine and it won't be fun.

I got a Spectre MAF adapter from Advance for $5.99 and and used that as the connection to the box. Used RTV to hold it in place. The adapter fits tightly and the tubing will keep it from sliding back into the airbox. I really didn't want anything solid that could come loose and go into the engine.

A big tip I would give would be to angle the adapter up. If you're using the stock diverter valves, the adapter exits the box right there and the tubing is forced to bend severely up over the valves. I ordered the hose from McMaster. It should arrive next week. The 3" Spectre hose from Advance/Autozone/Pepboys/etc. is 3" OUTER diameter and won't fit on the 3" INNER diameter MAF adapter. WTF? Also, if you're an e92, there is a brace that blocks the path of the hose to the fender well. I put two washers btw each bolt to move it out. Lastly, I dremeled the square bracket that hangs down under the powersteering bracket. Without removing it, the hose will never fit under the bracket.

Boom, you are my go to guy for this. I'm collecting parts right now but I'm definitely interested in seeing it. Maybe we can get the install on both cars done at the same time? (provided I get parts in time)

How did you clear the stock DVs? My box outlet Is right there and causes the hose to bend severely.

Nice comparison. I looked at your pix and your hose bend is what I'm talking about. I think I'm going to try to angle my adapter up to mitigate it. Also, you can rotate that nipple on the brake booster line 90 deg outward so that it clears the hose. That way you can clip the hose back into the clip on the airbox.

Thanks.

The hose fits but it is tight against the top corner of at least the front DV. The hose needs to be as high as possible on the airbox while still allowing the lid to close. The initial hose bend is from trying to clear the shock tower, not the DVs. I still think it's close to ideal given the hose size and space constraints. I am more conceared about if it will fit with a Vishnu CP which I would like to install sometime soon.

I like the idea about angling the adapter but I am not sure how solid it would connect to the airbox. Maybe you could cut the pipe off of the flange face and then JB weld it back on an angle before attaching the flange to the airbox. Seems like a lot of work for a slight change in angle that may not even have a measurable change in performance.

Thanks for the tip on the brake booster line. I was afraid I would break something as tight as it is. Were you actually able to turn it?

Yeah. I turned it with light pressure from pliers on either side of the nipple. I gripped the ridge and held the line and rotated. It's tight but it moved. Mine sticks out to like 2:00.
