Outside trim paint peeling?
Hey guys,
I noticed this peeling and a couple bare areas on the trim of my e90 between the doors and the roof. See pics: What causes this? My car is a 2006 and is covered under CPO. I don't ever remember owning a car that has had peeling paint when it was just out of the factory warranty. Is there an easy/cheap way to fix this? Is it covered under the warranty? thanks asus389 |

It's a known problem. I've HEARD it's easy to pull those off, but haven't seen the DIY. Someday I'm going to have the dealer pull them for me, get them blasted and powdercoated.

Mine is a 2006 325 as well, under CPO, and have exactly the kind of peeling in your picture, but it's a little worse than yours. The bad news is that it will get worse gradually (very slowly though); places where you have the top coat gone will lose the basecoat as well. I may be wrong but the peeling seems to be accelerated (or perhaps completely caused) by rain, or car washes -- of course, this doesn't mean that the paint on it is not defective.

Those rails just pop up. They're held in by like 5 or 6 clips I think. Start from the back (like in the OP's picture) and use a small flathead screwdriver. You can use the seal on the rear windshield as leverage. You'll probably break the first clip or 2 but after you get the second clip up you can slide the rail back...it'll just come off.
The seals are glued in but they're easy to take off and replace too. I didn't even reglue mine. They just slid back in. You could also vinyl the trim. I didn't have that peeling but I vinyled mine matte black. Just make sure you sand the paint flat otherwise the chipping will show through. |

I think you'll do more harm than good touching that up. Best solutions are to either remove and repaint the entire piece, or remove and vinyl it. Or try your luck under the CPO warranty, I'm not sure if this will be covered by that or not. It would certainly be covered under the original 4/50k warranty though.

I had the same issue with the trim on the driver's side and the dealer replaced it under the original warranty. Let us know if your dealer will cover it under CPO since I will have to go that route if the other side develops the same problem.

I think shadowline trim is shiny. And there's another trim that's flat black. Not sure what this one is called though. |

When I had LTBMW do some coding, he pulled and vinyl-ed mine. Looks pretty good for $40. I was going to bead blast/powder coat them until Long told me they weren't even metal and would melt.
Several clips broke, but the rails snapped back in and haven't blown out in the wind or anything yet. |

I think the sports package has matte ones. Mines ZSP anyways and I don't have a non ZSP to compare it too.. The dealer told me they aren't covered under the CPO. I guess maybe they'd be covered under dealer goodwill if you pushed, but I figured its not worth it at this point.

Does anyone know if they come painted? Or would I have to get a body shop to sand/paint or paint new ones?
I think these are the part numbers: 51137062137 51137062138 Update: I just replaced mine. I ordered the parts from Tischer using those part numbers for my 06 e90 ZSP. They were about $65 per side and they come painted and ready to install. Mini DIY: - Pop the old trim out using a flathead starting at the back and then pull up moving forward. You will break the clips, but thats OK because the new ones come with new clips. Do one side at a time so you can see how the old one is lined up while you install the new one. - Be careful lining the new trim up to fit properly under the rubber window seal in the front and then over the seal in the back. They are very hard to move back/forth if you don't line them up properly before snapping the new ones in. - Press down to snap the new trim in place. - There is no step 4. i just taped mine off with painters tape and sprayed that roof rack trim black again. looks good but not 100% smooth like OEM since there was peeling. you can probably sand it a little if you want and then do it. easy to do. did 3-4 coats.
note: im obviously not under warranty so i did it myself

if you're still under warranty get it replaced. I just got mine replaced last week and everything was covered under warranty.
